2021 Girls Get WISE Retreat

The Girls Get WISE Science Retreat is one of WISEatlantic’s signature events. The retreat takes place every spring at Mount Saint Vincent University where we have 60 girls in grades 7-10 participate in fun and engaging STEM activities. We also organize similar Girls Get WISE events all over Atlantic Canada, and host or sponsor around five each year. Participants have the opportunity to chat with female role models who work in various SETT careers, this is a great opportunity for girls to explore careers that they may have never heard of! The 2021 Girls Get WISE Retreat will be held virtually on May 1 from 10:30-3:00pm (AST). The 2021 Science Retreat is open to those who identify as girls in Atlantic Canada in grades 7-10. Early registration is preferred as STEM materials for activities will be mailed in advance. Registration opens February 22nd and will end on March 26th, no exceptions. Activities will include STEM trivia, virtual escape room, role model session, and a Crime Scene Analysis (CSI) activity! Register

Skills Canada Nova Scotia – Virtual Career Showcase

On Monday, May 3rd, we're hosting an online virtual career showcase where your students will be able to explore careers in skilled trades and technologies from the safety of their classrooms. Just like a regular career fair, your students will have the opportunity to browse booths set up by leading industry partners and get a snapshot into a variety of different careers through presentations, interviews & more. Your students can engage with the event by participating in the built-in trivia contest, and by doing so they will be entered to win a variety of amazing prizes. More details to come! Canva Class – Level 1

Never opened Canva or just been playing around? This class is for you. Amy has been a graphic designer for almost 20 years and wants to empower you to take control of your brand using Canva. Unix Shell, Version Control and R Programming Workshop Begins

Using software-carpentry.org materials this workshop introduces you to the fundamentals of the Unix Shell, Version Control with Git and R. This is a beginner level workshop series that is hands-on, covering the fundamentals of R, including data types, conditional statements, loops and functions, as well as program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. The goal is to teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging and using R in everyday tasks. You do not need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. You do need to have a laptop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages. Data driven image-guided therapy technologies are on the brink of transforming the healthcare landscape. However, developing these AI-based technologies brings a new set of challenges to the already arduous processes of technology commercialization. These disruptive technologies raise a myriad of issues in a rapidly changing intellectual property (IP_ environment. In this lecture, Steve Leonard will discuss the impact and challenges of AI-enabled technologies on innovation and traditional IP concepts. The lecture also addresses intellectual property protection of data driven technologies, AI generated works, inventions and designs, and the legal implications and requirements.
