ACENET: Introductory Programming with Python

This is a beginner level series that is hands-on, covering the fundamentals of introductory programming with Python. This includes data types, conditional statements, loops and functions, as well as program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. The goal is to teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging and using Python in everyday tasks. You do not need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented or previous programming experience but intermediate level experience with a computer is highly recommended. You do need to have a laptop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages. This workshop will take place on: Wednesday, September 27th, 1:00 - 4:30pm (Atlantic time) Wednesday, October 4th, 1:00 - 4:30pm (Atlantic time) Joining instructions will be provided prior to the first session. Prerequisites: Software Carpentry's Unix Shell or Introduction to Linux or similar experience Cloud computing provides great flexibility allowing complete control of the computing environment. In addition the environment can be copied, backed up, created and recreated in an automated way. In these lessons we will start you on the path towards making use of the great flexibility and power of cloud computing. A common use case for the cloud is its ability to provide web services. To explore the flexibility and power of cloud computing we will use the popular static website generator Jekyll. Static website generators offer many security benefits, and simplify and reduce the maintenance burden associated with well known dynamic CMSes such as Wordpress and Durpal.
