Building Intercultural Competence Workshop (Online)

As Nova Scotia becomes more culturally diverse, we all need to learn how to welcome and work with immigrants and build a better community together. In this full-day workshop, you will: Increase your understanding of settlement and integration issues Explore practical ways to welcome and support new immigrants Develop intercultural relationship-building skills for working with new immigrants This interactive workshop is open to organizations, service providers, educators, and community volunteers. We also deliver workshops tailored to individual organizations. There is no fee. Workshops will take place monthly, either online or in person at ISANS (6960 Mumford Rd, Suite 2120) as ISANS and provincial COVID regulations allow. Please be sure to register early!

Job Scheduling with Slurm

This core session is designed to help new users at ACENET and Compute Canada get up and running. This session teaches participants how to use Compute Canada’s queuing environment on the national systems, using the job scheduler Slurm. Learn how the scheduler works, how it allocates jobs, what are reasonable requests to minimize wait time, how to make the best use of the resources to be more efficient, how to get more throughput, how to get more jobs running at the same time, and how to troubleshoot and deal with crashes. This workshop is designed for either new HPC users familiar with Linux and Shell Scripting, but who have not had experience with using Slurm, or, for experienced users transitioning to Slurm or seeking to improve efficiency with the scheduler. In order to get the most from the session, participants are strongly encouraged to have a Compute Canada/ACENET account and to bring a laptop to do the exercises. Computational Fluid Dynamics – Ansys Fluent

This session provides an overview of Ansys Fluent and teaches participants how to use it to solve CFD problems. With advancements in computers and new generations of CPUs and GPUs, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is becoming an indispensable tool in many fields. Researchers and industrial design engineers are using CFD to predict and understand complex fluid flow and heat transfer problems, and to verify and optimize designs. Among open-source and commercial CFD packages, Ansys Fluent is one of the most popular commercial tools. In this workshop, you will learn how to set up a small problem and solve it in Ansys Fluent on your personal computer. The instructor will then demonstrate how to design and solve a large problem using a supercomputing cluster. No prior knowledge of Ansys Fluent is required. Participants must have a personal computer with administrative privileges to download software in order to do the exercise. This session will be delivered online. Participants must register using their institutional / organizational email address (not a personal email, ie. gmail). Interested in learning more about our Get into IT Program? We invite you to join us for one of our information sessions! Applications for the program will be opening on February 15th, 2022 for learners who are interested in pursuing an entry-level career as an IT Support Specialist or as a Cybersecurity Analyst. Designed to support those who have traditionally faced barriers entering Nova Scotia’s tech sector, Get Into IT is a no cost program for training and upskilling Indigenous Persons, Black Nova Scotians, persons of African Descent, racially visible individuals, persons with disabilities, immigrants, and women. Participants must be 18+, unemployed or underemployed*, have a high school diploma, GED certificate or a referral from a community organization, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and are a Nova Scotia resident. Professional development, industry networking opportunities, and in-course support will also be offered as part of this 25-week technical skills training program. Comparing External Audit to Internal Audit, and the Experience of Transitioning From One to the Other

The profession of External Audit and Internal Audit have numerous similarities and differences. However, it is not always a simple transition to move effectively from one to the other. Many of these challenges relate to academic credentials and knowledge, work experience, ability to deal with change and ambiguity, learning new standards and audit procedures, working with a wide variety of systems, soft skills, and a different mindset with regards to independence. Learn how many have made the transition successfully and how some have not, and why. The reality is that financial professionals account for a large portion of the skill base for internal audit groups. The facilitators will use real life examples based on their extensive experience managing audit teams and highlighting large Internal Audit Shops with specific programs, and how they recruited External Auditors to become Internal Auditors. They will outline what this process looks like, training strategies, and common pitfalls where it just did not work for some individuals.
