Farflung Studio: How remote work is paving the way for far-flung opportunities

January 18, 2023

While many companies are new to the remote work revolution, Farflung Studio has been fully-remote since its inception in 2019.

After years of working remotely for a San Franciscan tech startup from his hometown of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Alex Colgan decided he wanted to start his own business.

“A few years ago, I kind of wanted to be able to focus on doing a number of different projects, some local, some international,” he said.

And so, Farflung Studio was born.

It’s a marketing and brand consultancy company that supports early-stage tech startups and scaleups. They’ve served tech companies working in a variety of fields, from virtual reality, to blockchain, healthcare, space transport and generative AI.

Farflung’s small team of four is headquartered in Yarmouth, but they primarily work with far-flung companies beyond Nova Scotia’s borders, such as LedgerDomain in Las Vegas, Ninefold in San Francisco and MetaVRse in Toronto.

“It’s nothing that I ever thought you could even do from Yarmouth,” said Project Manager Grace McGray. “It’s something that surprises people on a pretty regular basis.”

The ability to work remotely has been good for business, but it’s also been good for the team.

“I’m autistic, and another member of the team is as well, and I think it’s really wonderful that remote-work situations like this can allow people who might not be able to work in a traditional environment—especially during a pandemic—to be employed and making money and creating things,” said McGray.

Their small but mighty team is a major point of pride for Farflung. They’re a big part of what’s helped them build long-lasting relationships with their clients, said Colgan.

“It’s been a really phenomenal experience over the last couple of years as everybody has continued to grow and gotten better at what they do,” he said.

Colgan foresees the remote work revolution that got jump started by the pandemic to only continue to accelerate in 2023.

“There’s a very strong appetite for talent and an increasing recognition that talent can be located anywhere and isn’t necessarily bound to a single place,” he said.

Farflung Studio is proof of just that—its ability to serve international clients from rural Nova Scotia has allowed the agency to now only grow as a business, but operate inclusively.
