A background in psychology is not widely considered a business essential, but for Craig Steinberg, Owner and Lead Designer of WBC Designs, it’s become one of the company’s greatest strengths. Long before WBC Designs grew into a full-service digital marketing agency, Steinberg’s interest in understanding people shaped the way he approached business, and ultimately the way he built it.
WBC Designs started as a passion project for Steinberg. Teaching himself to code in high school, Craig fell in love with it. After graduating from McGill University with a degree in psychology, he chose to be his own boss. He registered Web by Craig in 2008 and made a difficult, yet brilliant, decision.
“I approached non-profits and offered to build sites for free, or at heavily reduced cost, in exchange for testimonials, sponsorships, and referrals,” says Steinberg. “I was investing in my portfolio and my values at the same time.”
From there, organic relationships started to grow, to the point where Web by Craig rebranded to WBC Designs. Hiring cybersecurity, SEO, digital marketing, and other experts in many related fields to expand its services, WBC Designs became a full-service digital marketing agency.
Every time WBC Designs took on a new client, the focus was on the motivation rather than the end results. Steinberg knew the right questions to ask to achieve an authentic feel for his clients’ marketing.
“Here’s what I’ve learned: people don’t hire services or buy products. They seek a feeling,” says Steinberg. “When I help clients articulate their story and convey the emotions behind what they do, that’s when their marketing actually works.”
Understanding human behaviour drives more than one pillar for WBC Designs. When it comes to sustainability, accessibility, and community practices, a psychological approach helps the company thrive.
This is why these pillars are embedded in how WBC Designs operates. Craig and his team understand that businesses are built upon values and the importance of reflecting them in every aspect of a business, including hiring practices.
“We hire diverse teams, we pay fairly, and we mentor newcomers to the industry,” Steinberg remarks. “I’m personally involved in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, which influences how we show up in hiring and culture.”
Additionally, this can be seen in WBC Designs’ monthly packages, which were made for solo or small teams to be able to afford high-quality services tailored to their needs and budget. Not only does this align with WBC Designs’ accessibility and inclusion values, it allows for growth in unexpected ways.
“Here’s what we’ve discovered: we grow with our clients,” Steinberg says. “They start with a basic web package, then add SEO when they’re ready. Later, they layer in social media or cybersecurity. They come back to us to expand their services as their business grows. We’re partners in their journey, not just vendors in a transaction.”
This is what makes it all worth it for the WBC Designs team. With nearly two decades of growth, the biggest takeaway will always be: the relationships.
“The rewarding part isn’t the awards or the revenue growth,” Steinberg remarks. “It’s the clients who’ve been with us for 10+ years. It’s the relationships we’ve built with team members who become partners and friends.”
