Atlantic Labour Market Brief: December 2020

Employment fell sharply in December, down from the previous month by 62,600 jobs. Full-time jobs increased alongside fewer part-time. The unemployment rate increased slightly in December to 8.6%, influenced by the job reductions. The goods-producing sector added jobs (+11,300), while the service sector saw job reductions of 74,000.

Atlantic Canada

Employment fell sharply in December, down from the previous month by 12,600 jobs. The job reductions occurred in both full-time and part-time positions. The rate of unemployment rose sharply, going from 8.9% to 9.7%, influenced by the job reductions. The goods-producing sector lost jobs in December (-3,900), while the service sector saw job reductions of 8,500.
