Atlantic Labour Market Brief: August 2023

Canada

  • The country experienced growth in employment in August, amounting to 39,900 jobs.
  • The growth occurred in both full-time and part-time positions, though primarily full-time.
  • The rate of unemployment saw no change from last month, remaining at 5.5%.
  • The goods-producing sector lost jobs in August (-2,500), while the services-producing sector saw growth of 42,400 jobs.

Atlantic Canada

  • Employment grew in the latest month by 200 jobs.
  • Part-time jobs increased while full-time jobs declined.
  • The unemployment rate moved higher in the month to 7.6%.
  • The goods-producing sector added jobs (+2,100), while the service sector saw job reductions of 2,100.

  • Labour Force: 528,800
  • Employment: 491,600
  • Unemployment Rate: 7.0%
  • Labour Force Change: -8,000
