Venture Capital Investment Competition

Global VCIC is the world’s largest venture capital competition with over 120 university and graduate school teams competing. VCIC is the only place where students get to be VCs for the day and startups get an accelerator for the fundraising process. Students play the role of VCs who have around $100MM to invest in one of the startups presenting. They’ll be assessing the investment opportunities and pitching an investment strategy to top VC’s of Canada and the USA. Our judges are venture capitalists, who come to VCIC for the opportunity to reconnect with their alma maters, network with other VCs and get a peek at some early stage startups as well as bright students. Each VCIC regional finals showcases three of the Most VC-Backable Startups in the area. Women Entrepreneurship Conference: See It Be It – Crushing Entrepreneurial Stereotypes

An official event of the Women Entrepreneurship Conference; a free, month-long event series, presented by the Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (WEKH) in partnership with Women Enterprise Organizations of Canada (WEOC). Entrepreneurial stereotypes shape the design of funding programs, incubators and training, and influence financing decisions. Perhaps more importantly, they shape the aspirations and confidence of women. During this session, we will discuss the gendered and culturally specific assumptions about entrepreneurship and the challenges they present to women and introduce WEKH’s new See It Be It database of 1,000+ award-winning, Canadian women entrepreneurs. DeepSense Discovery Session

Join Dr. Tony Kess, Researcher at Fisheries and Oceans Canada based at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, to learn about the project “Polygenic architecture of life history divergence in North American Atlantic Salmon”. Simply put, the team has been using machine learning to better understand the genetic basis of traits important for the life cycle of the declining population of North American Atlantic Salmon. For this session, Tony will explain why DFO has been exploring the genetic basis of salmon life history, and describe how understanding variation in this adaptive genetic variation can support the management and potential restoration of this critical species. For those interested in some technical aspects, Tony will also touch on statistical and machine learning tools used in population genetics, including principal component analyses, genome-wide association, and random forest and out of bag sampling.
