Never opened Canva or just been playing around? This class is for you. Amy has been a graphic designer for almost 20 years and wants to empower you to take control of your brand using Canva. This class will cover Branding Basics for Entrepreneurs, as well as a hands-on Canva activity. She’ll explain where to find tools to manipulate text, images and elements as well as cover 3 main graphic design principles: readability, hierarchy and consistency. Peering into the Deep - Module 4 of  the Exploring Opportunities in Ocean Tech for Young Women Program The Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE) in partnership with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development – Nova Scotia, Ignite Labs, Dalhousie University’s Emera IDEAhub and DeepSense, and with support from IBM Canada and Engineers Nova Scotia, is thrilled to announce the launch of a program aimed at engaging young women in the region’s burgeoning ocean tech industry. Exploring Opportunities in Ocean Tech for Young Women is an extracurricular program being offered across the province to youth in grades 10-12 as part of a strategy to attract more under-represented groups to the marine industry. Featuring a monthly speaker series, mentoring program, and hands-on design-thinking workshop, this program will be led by women, for young women. This class will add on to the skills learned in Canva Level 1. We will review some basic branding and graphic design principles, as well as complete a hands-on Canva activity from scratch. Amy will show you how to add elements like shapes and arrows to your designs as well as some photo effects. She will also explain 3 new graphic design principles: symmetry, balance and image resolution. 2021 Girls Get WISE Retreat

The Girls Get WISE Science Retreat is one of WISEatlantic’s signature events. The retreat takes place every spring at Mount Saint Vincent University where we have 60 girls in grades 7-10 participate in fun and engaging STEM activities. We also organize similar Girls Get WISE events all over Atlantic Canada, and host or sponsor around five each year. Participants have the opportunity to chat with female role models who work in various SETT careers, this is a great opportunity for girls to explore careers that they may have never heard of! The 2021 Girls Get WISE Retreat will be held virtually on May 1 from 10:30-3:00pm (AST). The 2021 Science Retreat is open to those who identify as girls in Atlantic Canada in grades 7-10. Early registration is preferred as STEM materials for activities will be mailed in advance. Registration opens February 22nd and will end on March 26th, no exceptions. Activities will include STEM trivia, virtual escape room, role model session, and a Crime Scene Analysis (CSI) activity! Register

Unix Shell, Version Control and R Programming Workshop Begins

Using software-carpentry.org materials this workshop introduces you to the fundamentals of the Unix Shell, Version Control with Git and R. This is a beginner level workshop series that is hands-on, covering the fundamentals of R, including data types, conditional statements, loops and functions, as well as program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. The goal is to teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging and using R in everyday tasks. You do not need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. You do need to have a laptop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages.
