Ocean of Data Challenge: One Port City Begins

About this event Halifax Port Authority, PSA Halifax, COVE and DeepSense are are hosting the third Ocean Data Challenge. This free event will kick off on Monday, May 2nd at 4pm ADT with an introduction to the Challenge, presentations from experts, and the chance to ask questions to help idea exploration. Participants submit their video presentation on Monday, May 16th and the winners are announced on Friday, May 20th. Recently PSA Halifax acquired the Fairview Cove container terminal, and now owns both the Fairview Cove and the Atlantic Hub container terminals in Halifax, making our port unified like few others. The Port of Halifax now has one terminal operator, one railroad operator, and one port authority. This change helps Halifax become a One Port City and will create new opportunities for our community. This Data Challenge will invite participants to imagine new ways to drive port efficiency and sustainability, and to help us better understand and communicate the benefits of being a single container terminal operator port. Women in Tech Day 2022

Women in Tech Day is an interactive exploration which encourages young women to explore computer science and technology! Women in Tech Day is an inspiring, stereotype-busting, interactive exploration which encourages young women to consider the many career pathways and ever-increasing employment openings which exist through the study of computer science and technology. This event will help young women realize the possibilities offered through a career in technology by hearing important messages of the future from other students, faculty, and industry. The skill sets needed by industry through the study of computer science and IT can be linked to every aspect of study from communication, art and design, business, medicine, health, engineering, law, and more. In addition to hearing from our industry and student mentors, your students will be working through a series of activities using python to solve problems in data types, variables, input/output, if statements, and loops. With the help of our instructor and female mentors, they will be put into groups to solve logic and coding problems to build their confidence in computing! Coding experience isn’t necessary to attend the event.

All candidates have at least 7 years of work experience and have been screened by our team. What To Expect You get to interview many candidates and shortlist a selection for more detailed interviews later. Tech Wednesdays with NPower Canada

More than 80% of NPower Canada alumni secure employment or enroll in higher education within 6 months of graduating, with 30-40% already placed into jobs upon completing training. Graduates launch digital careers in roles such as Help Desk Agent, Data Analyst, QA / Tester and Business Systems Analyst with companies like TELUS, Accenture and CIBC. NPower Canada is a registered charity launching underserved young adults ages 17-30 into meaningful digital careers. NPower Canada's virtually delivered programs provide youth with 15 weeks of no-cost, part-time tech skills training, including industry certifications, complemented by employability skills coaching and wraparound supports (including bus pass, interview clothing and laptops/WiFi based on financial need). Program participants are also connected directly with employers, job retention supports and five years of alumni services including continued education and mentorship. Youth do not need any prior background in tech to apply. They must have completed their high school, Dogwood or GED, and be eligible to work in Canada. NPower Canada prioritizes serving lower-income, un/underemployed youth who are female-identified, IBPOC, 2SLGBTQ+, newcomers and youth with disabilities.
