SURGE Discover Hardware

October 28, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am ADT

Join SURGE and Guy Earle, president of IObIO as we explore various scientific hardware that you can program for your own projects!

Mondays 12:30-1:30 at SURGE – Life Science Centre Room 2660

Oct 7 – Control Strategies for your Prototype with Arduino and LabVIEW

Introductory session on simple methods for connecting with an Arduino and practical examples of control and automation.

(‘Practical examples of automation’ include positioning an item in 3D space, presenting custom stimulus on a user input event, deterministic P.I.D. and feedback loops, collecting rigorously timed data and more; all with computer or smart device control.)

Demonstration includes the control and feedback of a stepper motor with options for several sensor inputs.

This session is designed to showcase the limitless solutions in robotics and automation / control that are available and with the right tools, very accessible.

As this is the first class in the series, we will be introducing the concept of Data AcQusition (DAQ Systems) and highlighting the DAQ’s role in science and R&D.

There will be several examples of current technology, legacy systems and a deeper dive into the capabilities and limitations of the inexpensive Arduino platform and its associated peripherals.

First of many sessions, participants will accumulate a ‘toolbox’ of automation skills, building on previous sessions and culminating in the confidence to tackle and assess any automation challenge.

Oct 28 – Exploring the exciting world LEGO Robotics, this week we look at methods for integrating the LEGO mindstorm system into your prototype. Lots of fun demos including motor control, colour identification, haptic feedback and more.
