Welcome to Digital Nova Scotia, Tyler!

January 11, 2022

The entire Digital Nova Scotia team is very excited to introduce you to welcome our newest Project Coordinator, Tyler Usher-Jones!

Currently pursuing a bachelor of commerce at Dalhousie University, Tyler joins the Digital Nova Scotia team for his first co-op term. Hoping to major in marketing, Tyler is focused on growing his interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effective which made DNS the perfect fit. Previously he has worked within customer service and ski teaching positions, and is ready to apply the skills he has developed in those occupations during his time as a project coordinator.

We asked Tyler some quick questions to help introduce him to the DNS community, here are his responses;

What excites you the most about the tech sector in Nova Scotia?

The rapid growth of it, especially through Covid. We have seen so many small businesses struggle so much in the last two years, and many have turned to advancing their tech so that they can still have revenue while they are home. Due to this, DNS has become such an important part of the Nova Scotia tech sector, and I am excited to see how we will help the tech sector continue to grow.

While you work or study, what do you have playing in the background?

While I’m working or studying, I tend to listen to a wide range of stuff depending on my mood. Some days I will be listening to 90s hip-hop such as A Tribe Called Quest, or The Pharcyde, and other days I will be listening to something more acoustic like Cat Stevens or Neil Young. I have also more recently started to listen to soul and jazz music for something different. I have always been very into music, and I love to explore different genres, either when I am winding down at home or working hard.

What do you love most about your program at University?

My program at university can be quite the workload, which can be a lot of stress, but I am lucky to have lots of friends in my same program that I can study alongside to ease some of the stress. So, my favourite part of my program is the bond between all the commerce students, and how rewarding it can be to work super hard studying for a test, and having that hard work pay off.

What is your dream career? Where do you see yourself in five years?

My dream career currently is a little up in the air. I would love to open a shop or business eventually, and create something I am passionate about. For now I want to explore many different avenues, and I am excited to see how DNS will better me as a worker and member of a team.

What’s something you’re passionate about?

The thing I am most passionate about in my free time nowadays is skateboarding. I picked it up around a year and a half ago, and love spending time at the skatepark improving on my tricks and just hanging out with my friends who also skate. It has taught me how to be diligent and determined as sometimes you can try a trick a hundred times trying to get it right and still fail. Although when that hard work pays off it is one of the best feelings ever.

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island?

If I could bring three things to a desert island, I would firstly need a sleeping bag so I don’t freeze or get mauled by bugs and such things. Then I would need some way to get food or use the landscape to my advantage, so I would probably get a machete, for hunting, exploring, and even to help make some kind of shelter. For my final item, I might have to go for a pot I can put over a fire that I can hopefully figure out how to build. this way I can cook any food I have, as well as boil water to make it safe to drink. I know a lot of people would bring something for entertainment, but I guess I will have to find my own fun, hopefully the deserted island is pretty cool.
