Welcome to Digital Nova Scotia, Jingwen!

October 1, 2021

The Digital Nova Scotia team is growing, we’ve added a new member to our team!

Originally from Huai’an, China, Jingwen Bi came to Nova Scotia in 2015 for university. Proud to call Halifax her second hometown, Jingwen loves the friendly people and beautiful scenery. With a Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University, she has developed strong research skills, communication skills, and organizational abilities. As a project coordinator at Digital Nova Scotia, Jingwen will be supporting various initiatives, including our Digital Assistance Programs, and she’s very much looking forward to it. During her free time, you’ll find her spending time with her family and friends, hiking, or reading!

We asked Jingwen some quick questions to help introduce her to the DNS community, here are her responses;

The tech sector in Nova Scotia is thriving, what are you most looking forward to about working in this industry? Is there a particular area in tech that excites you the most?

I would love to learn from my colleagues and leaders how they communicate with businesses, digital service providers, and other stakeholders; how our team members collaborate; set goals and achieve the goals fast to help Digital Nova Scotia grow steadily and rapidly.

The area that excites me most is that Digital Nova Scotia offers businesses opportunities to learn the skills to maintain their websites and promote their services through social media. Also, we have a very meaningful Youth Engagement Program, to encourage young people to learn and develop interests in the technology industry through video game development, coding, robotics, and hardware. These programs are very beneficial and can help everyone in the long run.

Tell us a bit about your education! What did you love most about your program at University?

I studied Environmental Sciences at Dalhousie University. The most influential and impressive part of my education is the wonderful professors that I have met. I could feel their passion in their teaching, and they took a lot of actions to protect the environment. The professors themselves are already the best teaching that influences every student. Someone at the Science Department office posted “If you are thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree. If you are thinking one hundred years ahead, educate the people. – Kwan Tzu”.

Besides, our program teaches us to conduct research step by step; offers field trips to nature, and provides internship opportunities or Co-ops, allowing students to develop strong passion and gain hands-on experience.

What’s something you’re passionate about that might surprise us?

I am passionate about reading environmental-related articles, such as air pollution, global warming, renewable energy, etc. I am also constantly sharing my environmental-related knowledge with my family and friends. I have been taking action to reduce my environmental footprint and will contribute most of my free time to help with environmental issues.

If you were given a plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you want it to be?

China, I miss my home.
