WBC Designs stands out for combining innovation, client care, and sustainable practices. Founded by Craig Steinberg, a self-taught coder who began designing websites in the ’90s, WBC has grown into a trusted partner for small businesses and nonprofits.
From “Web by Craig” to a Collaborative Network
Craig’s journey began as a teenager, reading a book called HTML for Fun and Profit, which quickly led to building his first website for his father’s survey company. From there, passion and curiosity carried him forward, breaking into the industry, even as his formal training was in psychology, not graphic design or computer science.
By 2008, after years working in emergency medicine, Craig decided to turn his side projects into a business: Web by Craig. At the time, “webmasters” did everything, design, copy, SEO, UX, before these fields were even fully defined.
As the industry matured, Craig recognized the need for specialization. That realization sparked the rebrand to WBC Designs, which now operates as a partnership of experts.
“I’m knowledgeable in a lot of areas, but I can’t be an expert in everything all the time. By rebranding as WBC Designs, I created a model where we bring in the right specialists for the job, while keeping things affordable for clients.”
Websites That Grow With You
Unlike many agencies that treat websites as one-time projects, WBC treats them as living systems that need to be maintained, optimized for speed and refreshed as the business grows. WBC’s attentiveness goes well beyond technical upkeep. Craig recalls noticing an HVAC client was
hiring on Facebook, but without a careers page on their site. He built one proactively, streamlining their recruitment process.
Branding as Strategy, Not Decoration
For Craig, branding goes beyond logos and colors, it’s about strategy. He relishes projects where clients come with nothing but an idea, guiding them through naming, visual identity, and digital presence.
“It’s like planting a seed together and then watching it grow into a tree, and sometimes even into a forest. The right name and brand identity can completely change a business’s trajectory.”
One example is The Dream Analyst, a client whose initial brand identity confused audiences. WBC helped them rebrand with a sharper focus, ultimately helping them land features with Oprah Daily, IKEA, and Disney Pixar.
SEO, GEO, and the Future of Digital Visibility
Even the best-designed site is useless if it can’t be found. That’s why WBC focuses on SEO, and is already moving beyond it into Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
“Generative Engine Optimization means optimizing your brand for inclusion in AI-generated responses, like Google’s new answer boxes or replies from ChatGPT. If you’re not doing it, you risk being invisible where people now search for information.”
For industry professionals, this distinction is critical. It’s a shift that could redefine digital marketing in the coming years.
Powered by 100% Renewable Energy
Sustainability is another area where WBC leads. Every site they host runs on servers powered by 100% renewable energy.
“Efficient websites use less electricity, and hosting them on renewable energy reduces pollution. The cost is the same, sometimes even less. There’s no downside, and it aligns with our values and our clients’.”
This commitment reflects Craig’s broader view: good business is about more than profits; it’s about responsibility to clients, communities, and the planet.
The Human Side of Design
Perhaps most distinctive is Craig’s empathy-driven approach. With a background in psychology and emergency medical services, he has a unique ability to listen deeply and explain simply.
“Many small business owners come to us frustrated because larger agencies didn’t take the time to understand them,” Craig says. “With us, they’re heard, supported, and treated as partners, not accounts.”
That personal connection keeps clients coming back, proving that great digital design can combine tech and humanity.
