The Nova Scotia Start Up Challenge

You’re invited to join the Centre for Women in Business and Ryerson University Diversity Institute for the second annual Nova Scotia Start Up Challenge for immigrant women entrepreneurs!

The Nova Scotia Start Up Challenge takes place over four weeks and includes:

  • three half-day workshops on:
  • value proposition & pitching
  • marketing & branding
  • financial planning for entrepreneurs
  • optional one-on-one coaching – up to two hours per week for four weeks
  • a final showcase and pitch competition where one participant will win a $5,000 in-kind award (i.e., marketing and branding, research, product development, etc.)

All participants will also receive a one-year membership to the Centre for Women in Business at no cost for ongoing business support.

This program is part of a pilot and research into immigrant entrepreneurship and barriers and facilitators to growth. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, you must:

  • be an immigrant newcomer woman
  • have been in Canada for less than 5 years
  • have Permanent Resident, Refugee or Protected Person status
  • International student applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • currently live in Nova Scotia and intend to settle her permanently
  • understand and speak English
  • have a business idea and/or previous experience opening/running a business
  • commit to 30+ hours for the program over a period of 4 weeks
  • be available for pre and post program interviews with Ryerson University

If there are barriers to your participation, such as technology or Internet access or access to childcare, please let us know. We will work with you to address and remove these barriers.

Dates: Saturdays, January 23 – February 13, 2021
