For this month’s feature, we sat down with Katie Feltmate, Business Development Lead at Scio Logica, to learn how the Halifax-based IT and cybersecurity firm is helping local organizations strengthen their digital infrastructure, reduce risk, and plan for the future. With roots in public relations and a passion for people, Katie brings a unique perspective to tech; one that focuses as much on relationships and trust as it does on systems and security.
What is Sciologica?
Sciologica is a Canadian-owned and operated IT and cybersecurity firm based in Halifax. The name combines the Latin Scio (“I know”) and Logica (“logic”), reflecting their approach, a mix of their technical roots and strategic mindset.
“We provide everything from help desk support to full IT consultancy,” Katie explains. “That includes setting up hardware, troubleshooting, cybersecurity audits, and even acting as a CTO for smaller organizations that don’t have one in-house.”
But beyond the technical services, Scio Logica sees itself as a long-term partner to the organizations they serve. “We’re not just here to fix your Wi-Fi or reset a password,” Katie says. “We’re here to understand your goals and help you build systems that support them.”
Katie’s Path Into Tech
Katie’s career path did not begin in IT. She has a background in public relations, with both a BPR and MPR from Mount Saint Vincent University. “I came into this field through the marketing and communications side,” she says. “But what drew me in was the people… I realized I really enjoyed building relationships, learning about businesses, and figuring out how we can help them grow.”
That people-first approach now defines how she works with clients at Scio Logica. “It’s not about pushing products. It’s about being curious, asking questions, and building trust.”
She says her favorite part is when a client realizes how much better things can be. “So many people come to us saying they didn’t realize how bad their service was until they saw what real support feels like. They were paying for things that weren’t even set up properly. Fixing that and giving them peace of mind is the most rewarding part.”
What Makes Scio Logica Different
According to Katie, there are several things that make Scio Logica stand out in a competitive market.
Deep Technical Bench Strength
“We’re partnered with our sister company, Galaxia, which is a space engineering firm,” Katie says. “That gives us access to technical talent that you just don’t see at a typical IT services company.”
Whether it’s supporting infrastructure or deploying advanced cybersecurity protocols, this edge allows Sciologica to take on projects others might shy away from. “We’ve got people building tech for space. There’s no system we can’t understand.”
Local-First, Relationship-Focused
All of Sciologica’s staff live and work in Atlantic Canada. “We don’t outsource,” Katie says. “Clients know our names, and we know theirs. We show up in person, we meet for coffee, we become part of their team.”
She describes their model as “embedded support.” Instead of submitting tickets and waiting days for a response, clients can call or message someone they know. “That level of personal service really matters, especially for nonprofits and smaller teams.”
Nonprofit Support and Strategic Partnerships
Sciologica demonstrates their commitment to supporting the not-for-profit sector through reduced cost services including free mobile lines through a partnership with Eastlink. “We offer free mobile for small non-profits,” Katie says. “They’re often priced out of quality IT services, and we don’t want to see that happen.”
In one case, she shares, a for-profit client saved over $10,000 a year just by switching to their Eastlink pricing. “Those kinds of savings can be game-changing.”
A Look Inside the Client Journey
One of Sciologica’s biggest strengths is how it onboards new clients.“We treat the first meeting like a discovery session,” Katie says. “We don’t walk in with a pitch. We ask questions. We want to understand what the organization does, what their mission is, and where technology fits in.”
After that comes a full audit of their systems, including cybersecurity posture, subscriptions, hardware inventory, and inefficiencies. “We often find they’re paying for tools they’re not using, or missing obvious vulnerabilities. We clean that up fast and make sure they’re secure.”
Katie acknowledges that switching IT providers can be intimidating. “We get it. You’re handing over critical infrastructure, your data, that’s a big deal. But we’ve done this so many times, and we’ve got a strong process to make the transition easy and seamless.”
Planning for the Future: Trends and Tools
As technology continues to change rapidly, Katie says the team at Sciologica is helping clients stay ahead of trends like cloud infrastructure, hybrid work, and AI. “Clients are asking us all the time — how do we use AI without adding risk? How do we prepare for what’s next?”
With a wealth of knowledge in commercial tech and aerospace innovation (through Galaxia), Sciologica offers clients up-to-date guidance and proactive planning. “We don’t just want to fix today’s issues. We want to help you be future-ready.”
Something to Try: Free 360° IT Health Check
Right now, Sciologica is offering a free 30-minute IT and cybersecurity health check to any business or nonprofit. “It’s a no-commitment way to see where you’re at,” Katie explains. “We walk through your setup, identify risks or inefficiencies, and send you a simple, actionable report.”
Whether you’re confident in your systems or just unsure where to start, Katie recommends giving it a try. “It’s easy, it’s helpful, and it can give you a better sense of your tech’s role in your overall strategy.”
