Resmed aims to create cloud-connected medical devices that transform the lives of those with respiratory conditions. In this Q&A, we talk with Dawn Paquette, Senior Director, User Technology Experience at Resmed. Dawn walks us through Resmed’s initiatives, the evolution of the company and its products and the future of the digital health industry.
DNS: Resmed focuses on raising awareness of sleep apnea, COPD, and other respiratory conditions. What are some of the key initiatives or programs the company has in place to educate the public and healthcare providers?
Dawn: At Resmed, our mission is to create life-changing health technologies that people love. For 35 years, Resmed has pioneered innovations in respiratory therapy, including CPAP therapy and digital health solutions. Our goal is to empower 500 million people worldwide to achieve their full health potential by 2030 and change the delivery of healthcare. One of our recent initiatives to help educate the public and healthcare providers was our Global Sleep Survey, which revealed a widespread global sleep crisis. People are losing an average of nearly three nights of restorative sleep each week – and nearly one in four (22%) respondents choose to just live with poor sleep rather than seek help. That tells us there’s a real need for greater awareness and education.
From a public / consumer perspective, we’re focused on destigmatizing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy and positioning sleep health as more approachable. For providers, we’re focused on education to help drive earlier diagnosis and intervention for sleep apnea.
Beyond CPAPs and masks, we also have a number of brands across our Residential Care Software (RCS) business that give providers the software they need to support their patients at home or wherever they are living.
DNS: Resmed offers a range of sleep and respiratory care products. Could you share more about how the company and its products have evolved over time?
Dawn: Resmed has come a long way since our start 35 years ago. We’ve evolved from a medical device company to a fully unified health technology brand that serves millions of consumers, healthcare professionals, and software users worldwide.
In March, we unveiled a new brand that unified Resmed’s brand portfolio to better serve both individuals and healthcare providers worldwide, while reflecting our expanding focus on consumer engagement.
Today, we are a global leader in health technology, delivering solutions that help people rise to their full potential through better sleep and breathing, with care delivered in the home.
DNS: Resmed envisions a world where people can achieve their full potential through better sleep and breathing. How does the company actively work toward this goal in its daily operations?
Dawn: An estimated 2.3+ billion people worldwide suffer from sleep apnea, insomnia, COPD, or other respiratory insufficiency.123 Resmed’s 2025 Global Sleep Survey also highlights the widespread impact of poor sleep, with one-third of respondents reporting sleep difficulties, including trouble falling asleep (34%) and staying asleep (29%).
At Resmed, we pioneer innovative solutions designed to treat and keep people out of the hospital, empowering them to live healthier, higher-quality lives. Our digital health technologies and cloud-connected medical devices transform care for people with sleep apnea, COPD, and other chronic diseases. Our comprehensive out-of-hospital software platforms support the professionals and caregivers who help people stay healthy in the home or care setting of their choice. By enabling better care, we improve quality of life, reduce the impact of chronic disease, and lower costs for consumers and healthcare systems in more than 140 countries.
DNS: Resmed is known for being a leader in sleep health technology. Can you share some recent innovations or research breakthroughs the company has made?
Dawn: One of our most exciting recent research breakthroughs was the announcement of a major study in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, which found sleep apnea patients who use CPAP live longer.
The study found that in people with sleep apnea, CPAP therapy lowered the overall chance of dying by 37% and the chance of heart-related death by 55%. This research reinforces the importance of treating sleep apnea – it’s not just about better rest, using CPAP versus not using CPAP can literally be a matter of life or death.
DNS: Where do you see the digital health industry heading in the next 5 years?
Dawn: Over the next five years, we expect the global demand for sleep health and breathing health solutions to continue to grow. We’re also keeping a close eye on digital wearables and other connected devices. We believe these tools can help consumers better understand their sleep habits and health – helping to drive more personalized and proactive care.
DNS: Any recent news for Resmed?
Dawn: In September 2024, we introduced our 2030 Strategy, focused on accelerating product and technology innovation, operational excellence, and financial strength to drive long-term growth. Building on that strategy, we unveiled a new brand in March 2025. The rebrand unifies Resmed’s portfolio to better serve both individuals and healthcare providers, while supporting our growing direct-to-consumer engagement.
Also, in April 2024 we opened our new Halifax office. Located on the vibrant Westway campus, our brand new 36,000 square feet office has been thoughtfully designed to encourage collaboration and inspire creativity. The space features state-of-the-art meeting rooms, flexible work areas, and a spacious café that doubles as an all-hands gathering space. It’s a true plug-&-play environment, with fully equipped sit-stand desks throughout, making it easy to settle in and get to work. The office also hosts regular events and activities that bring people together and foster a sense of community.
