Managing social media platforms and developing engaging content is not always smooth sailing but thats where Ocèan Communications comes in. Océan Communications services help organizations navigate through difficult waters with services such as communications strategy, promotional writing, social media engagement and video production to name a few. We sat down with Nathalie Poirier from Océan Communications to discuss social media, content development, and her journey running a small business based in the Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia.
Tailored Social Media Training: A Customized Approach
Nathalies’ approach to social media training is anything but a one-size fits all.. With her experience working with clients across a variety of industries —from non-profits to health and IT— Nathalie tailors each session to meet the unique needs of the client.
“My clients come from many backgrounds, from non-profits, the health industry, and even IT,” Nathalie shares “For me its about teaching the basics then diving into analytics which become a key part of the strategy moving forward.”
Successful strategy goes beyond the numbers—it’s about understanding the story behind them. For Nathalie, analytics are a vital tool, but she also emphasizes the importance of qualitative measurements.
“I believe in not just quantitative, but qualitative metrics,” she explains. “Whether it’s a follow-up survey or a focus group, I want to know how well the message is resonating with the people you’re trying to reach.”
Every business is different, and Nathalie’s’ personalized approach with each client helps businesses feel more confident in navigating the digital world.
Crafting Promotional Videos That Connect
When Nathalie creates promotional videos for her clients, she combines strategy with visual storytelling to forge a deeper connection with the audience. Her process involves sitting down with the client to understand their message and distill it into something concise yet impactful.
“ I get as much information as I can from the client to get a feel of the key messages they want to communicate,” Nathalie explains. “Then, I condense it to the smallest form that can have the biggest impact.”
Collaboration in the process is key. Nathalie involves the client in each step, ensuring they understand how the project evolves and are proud of the final product. “I believe in keeping my clients involved from the get-go to make them feel part of the process. This way, they are not only happy with the end result, but they’ve been able to see the process themselves as it has moved along.”
A Success Story: Helping a Local Church Thrive
A notable success story for Océan Communications involves their work with Cole Harbour Woodside United Church, which faced the challenge of operating remotely while maintaining their congregation during the pandemic.
“That’s when I stepped in to help them navigate the digital landscape,” Nathalie recounts. “ I helped them get set up and comfortable using Zoom and introduced them to YouTube Live. The public now knows that if they want updates on anything that is going on within the church they can find them on Facebook and Instagram. ”
The results speak for themselves: church attendance is back to pre-COVID numbers, YouTube views have soared by over 200%, and their Facebook followers have doubled!
Running a Small Business in Nova Scotia
As a Nova Scotia native, Nathalie brings a deep sense of community to her work. Her background working in economic development has helped her to develop strong connections with many local organizations.
“I am a natural networker,” she shares. “I love creating partnerships and working collaboratively with all sorts of organizations.” For Nathalie, It’s about connecting people and seeing how those connections can grow into something valuable.
The Power of Networking: Advice for Small Businesses
Nathalie has two powerful pieces of advice for small business owners: meet people in person and leverage your network.
“Don’t close any doors,” she advises. “You never know when a person you meet at a networking event might become an important connection for your business in the future. I believe in ‘putting out my tentacles’—reaching out and talking to different people. More often than not, those connections will resurface and lead to unexpected opportunities.”
The Meaning Behind “Let Your Communications Flow”
When the time came to name and brand her business, Nathalie wanted to capture her love for the ocean and her philosophy of communication through bilingualism in Ocèan Communications .
For Nathalie, the ocean has always been a place of calmness and fluidity. The company’s slogan, “Let Your Communications Flow” reflects these ideas. Nathalie aims to make marketing less stressful for her clients, ensuring that their communications feel natural and effortless, with constant collaboration and discussion every step of the way.
“I want my clients to think that the whole marketing aspect shouldn’t be that stressful,” Nathalie explains. “I strive to make it a natural flow, where they are involved, and there’s constant communication. I try to make it a natural flow where there’s constant discussions and consultations.”
Bilingual Services and Growth in the Francophone Community
Océan Communications offers their services in both English and French, with a growing focus on the Francophone community.
“French services have always been part of my business, but I have been seeing the demand grow,Nathalie says. “I have recently started working with some provincial Francophone organizations.“The community is tight-knit, and I look forward to playing my small part in it.”
Riding the Next Wave: What’s New for Ocean Communications
2024 was a year of realigning and restructuring for Océan Communications. Nathalie took some time away to refocus her efforts.
“It was a time to reassess and reprioritize the type of work that I wanted to focus on and the types of clients that I wanted to work with,” she explains.
So far in 2025, Océan Communications is incorporated and has expanded its team. Nathalie has brought on a subcontractor to help with video production, allowing her to offer even more tailored services to her growing client base.
