Established in 2016 to highlight inspiring and influential leaders working in the ICT sector in Nova Scotia, the fifth annual Digital Diversity Awards took place on October 21, 2020. For last year’s event, we presented 5 unique rewards to industry leaders to celebrate their strides for diversity. These awards included Next Generation Leadership, Fueling the Digital Economy, Change Maker, Diversity and Inclusion Champion, and Shaping the Future.

MEMBERTOU, NS, March, 16, 2021 – The Mi’kmaw Economic Benefits Office (MEBO) is honoured to announce an award win from Digital Nova Scotia in the Diversity and Inclusion Champion category. This award celebrates a company or organization that actively promotes the importance of diversity and inclusion in Nova Scotia’s technology sector by implementing strategies for welcoming workplaces, diverse hiring practices, and inclusion initiatives.

MEBO has a strong reputation for advancing education and workforce development opportunities for Indigenous peoples across industries including in skilled trades, education, and information communications technology (ICT). The organization’s objective within the technology sector is to increase the number of Indigenous students pursuing education and careers in the STEM fields that prepare them with the skills required to fill labour market gaps in today’s technology sector. MEBO’s initiatives include a Unama’ki STEM (B) strategy, Pathways in Technology Early College High School (PTECH) pilot, Post-secondary Student Inventory and Youth Connector Program.

“We are humbled to receive this award from Digital Nova Scotia in a category that recognizes the importance of diversity in the workplace and its direct impact on a strengthened economy” states Alex Paul, Executive Director of MEBO. Paul further adds, “Our organization prides itself on a results-driven approach to engagement and strategy development. We serve Indigenous communities across Nova Scotia, leading collaborative and inclusive engagement with industry and government partners. To be recognized for the work we’re doing to serve our communities is a great honour, and we give many thanks to those who selected our organization to receive this award.”

The award was announced at the Annual Digital Diversity Awards celebration that recognizes leaders in the technology sector who are proactively making a difference in diversity and inclusion.
