Trying to find her place in the “new normal” world, Sharon Hickey recently retired from a 30-year career in Newfoundland’s offshore oil industry. With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting everything around her, Sharon decided to start a brand new chapter in her life, one where she can be active, engaged, and relevant.
A naturally curious person, Sharon wanted to know more about web design and development. With an interest and connection to the rapidly growing profession, she spent the past year searching for a coding program that felt like the right fit – and she found it with Skills for Hire.
“The Skills for Hire program is so holistic and supportive, it is not just about building websites and coding. The engagement from the Skills for Hire team and the support they offer is amazing and greatly
appreciated. From the live demos, the guest speakers, the career kick-starters, the DNS membership, the
Bluedrop learning program and the slack channel all make this experience very satisfying.”
With infinite possibilities for her second career, Sharon knows she made the right decision for her by exploring a career in web development. Whether she is learning CSS or JavaScript, the interaction between the webpage, code and users is something that continues to fascinate her and she loves watching a website come to life. With no prior web design or coding experience, Sharon is excelling in the program, and once complete, she hopes to work with small companies to help them take their business to the next level and contribute to their digital success.
