At Digital Nova Scotia, we know our province’s tech sector is small but mighty. With rapid growth and global connections, Nova Scotia has a unique opportunity: to build workplaces that don’t just hire diverse talent, but empower people to thrive.
Why diversity matters here at home
Our research shows what many already know from experience: when teams are more diverse, they’re more innovative, more resilient, and better positioned to solve complex problems. Diversity also helps close skills gaps by opening doors to underrepresented groups – women, gender-diverse individuals, Indigenous Peoples, newcomers, people of colour, and persons with disabilities.
But inclusion is where the real opportunity lies. Representation matters, yes, but it’s when employees feel heard, supported, and valued that organizations see the biggest impact: stronger retention, better collaboration, and greater creativity.
What we heard from Nova Scotia’s tech community
Through our research, we heard directly from people working in the sector. They spoke honestly about challenges, but also about the opportunities ahead:
- A small ecosystem means high impact: With fewer players, each company has the chance to set the tone for the whole community. When one organization makes progress, it ripples outward.
- Cost of living pressures: Rising housing costs and salaries that don’t always keep pace can push diverse talent to look elsewhere. Employers who focus on inclusion and support can set themselves apart as workplaces worth staying for.
- Culture matters: In a province where personal connections often influence hiring and advancement, there’s an opportunity to lead by building transparent, welcoming practices that attract and retain new voices.
These insights remind us: while Nova Scotia has unique challenges, we also have unique strengths. With intention and collaboration, our sector can build inclusive workplaces that reflect our province’s values and future potential.
Turning research into action
That’s exactly what our Creating an Inclusive Culture (CIC) program is designed to do. Supporting 15 tech organizations, CIC offers practical tools, 1-on-1 coaching, and measurable outcomes to help employers move from intention to impact (and we’re working with some of the best in the business – P4G).
It’s not about quick fixes or checklists. It’s about shaping workplaces where diverse teams feel empowered to do their best work, and in turn, strengthening Nova Scotia’s digital economy.
Final thought
Nova Scotia’s tech sector is growing quickly, and this is our moment to lead. By embracing inclusion now, we can build stronger companies, attract top talent, and create a community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Spaces in CIC are limited, and the program starts soon, so if you’re ready to be part of this change, now is the time to join us. Questions? Reach out to Emily from our team!
