Canada

  • Employment grew at a strong pace in January, up from the prior month by 150,000 jobs.
  • The growth occurred in both full time and part time positions, though primarily full time.
  • The rate of unemployment saw no change from last month, remaining at 5.0%.
  • The goods producing sector added jobs (+25,400), while the services producing sector saw growth of 124,700 jobs.

Labour Force: 21,078,300 (+152,500)
Employment: 20,032,300 (+150,000)

 

Atlantic Canada

  • Employment rose during the month by 6,100 jobs, making it the sixth consecutive monthly gain.
  • The growth occurred in both full time and part time positions.
  • The unemployment rate declined slightly in January to 7.4%.
  • The goods producing sector added jobs (+3,400), while the services producing sector saw growth of 2,900 jobs.
