For the last 7 years, Digital Nova Scotia has worked in partnership with The Discovery Centre to run our Digital Discovery Camps across Nova Scotia. Digital Discovery Camp has made its mark on Nova Scotian communities, focusing on reaching underrepresented and marginalized communities across the province. The entry-level camps for young tech enthusiasts are hosted at the Discovery Centre and various locations throughout Nova Scotia and would not be possible without the help of our Epic Gigabyte sponsor REDspace, Kilobyte sponsor Garvin Allen, Megabyte sponsor Lockheed Martin and Community sponsor NSCC as well as our partnerships with various community groups.
The collaborative spirit and support of our community partners and sponsors has been instrumental in making the rural camps possible. This year we hosted 4 free Digital Discovery camps between July 12th and August 26th in 6 different locations. Camps were hosted in Bridgewater at the YMCA Youth Centre, in Spryfield at the Chebucto Family Centre in partnership with Brendan Magquire’s office and In The Loop Association, and Ignite Labs in New Glasgow and Yarmouth.
This year we happily welcomed 70 new and returning campers between the ages of 9-14 from across the province! Campers from diverse backgrounds and ages were immersed in interactive learning activities relating to new developments in tech. Campers had the opportunity to connect with 16 professional mentors in the tech industry. Mentors delivered interactive and hands-on sessions which included coding, game development, and micro:bit tutorials, and they were thrilled to interact with excited and curious campers who kept them busy with lots of questions! Mentors helped provide an unforgettable experience for youth and showcased innovative technologies being developed right here in Nova Scotia. We are extremely thankful to Brilliant labs, Coding Ninja, Hutch Games, REDspace and Skills NS Canada for providing incredible mentors for The Digital Discovery Camps.
