Mindfulness for Mental Health

“Resilience and adaptability are the results of mindfulness, which ultimately lead to our success in life,” says Floria Aghdamimehr, Leadership Trust Consultant and Coach at Recognize Your Potential. She’s facilitating a free webinar on Wednesday May 27th at 2pm called Navigating COVID-19: Mindfulness for Mental Health, hosted by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce.

Floria has been practicing, promoting and teaching mindfulness for over three decades. Although her educational background is in nutrition, the practice of mindfulness deeply resonated with her at a young age, and she remains proud of her ability to turn her passion into a career. Floria’s interest in mindfulness started when she realized that life is 10% what happens and 90% how we react. She was eager to dive into that 90% and gain insight on how we can change our personal outcomes. “Practicing mindfulness means focusing on the present rather than reliving the past or worrying about the future,” says Floria.

She says that the challenges caused by the current pandemic have created an urgency to rethink and shift focus for leaders and teams. “Integrating mindfulness in our daily routine is always helpful, but during times of crisis it’s even more important, especially during times of uncertainties to see opportunities,” says Floria, “We should focus on the things we can do, rather than the things we cannot do.”

“Whether you are a business owner, an IT specialist or a CEO, there is still an abundance of opportunity out there right now, and mindfulness can help us find these opportunities sooner,” Floria explains. According to a 2018 article in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, researchers found that participants who practiced mindfulness for six weeks at work showed reduced work -life conflict, increased job satisfaction, and an increased ability to focus their attention. This was the first-ever scientific study on the effects of mindfulness training on attentional focus at work, and it defined mindfulness as concentration, sensory clarity and equanimity working together to improve attention. Mindfulness is both a complex and difficult practice to implement into our daily routines however, Floria says it is possible, and her upcoming webinar is designed to highlight strategies participants can use at work and in their personal lives.

Floria also hosts a weekly podcast, Attitude of Altitude, where she discusses topics like the mindset of happiness, positive communication, self-awareness, and gratitude at work, all through the lens of positivity. Her ability to radiate compassion and kindness in daily interactions make her a great educator; she is patient and takes pride in her ability to work alongside clients until they feel their goals have been met. “Enjoying the journey is not just a cliché, it’s a way of business and life,” says Floria.
