Senior Systems Developer – Digital Nova Scotia – Leading Digital Industry

Senior Systems Developer

Venor is proud to partner with Byos, a cybersecurity innovator transforming the way organizations protect their networks.

Byos is on a mission to make networks invisible. Their award-winning microsegmentation platform cloaks devices, isolates threats, and protects access without exposing anything or risking data leaks. Built for Zero Trust and adaptable to any environment, Byos is trusted across sectors like Defense, Healthcare, and Critical Infrastructure to shrink attack surfaces and keep mission-critical systems safe.

The Senior Systems Developer will play a critical role in building and maintaining the software that powers Byos’ security infrastructure. This is a highly technical role requiring deep expertise in Linux systems, networking, and Python development. Reporting to the CTO, you will design, develop, and optimize system-level applications that interface with networking, security, and database components, directly impacting the performance, security, and scalability of Byos products.

What You’ll Do

  • Designing and developing software to translate information into firewall rules, routing table updates, and database models.
  • Configuring and managing Linux firewalls (nftables, iptables) and routing tables.
  • Building functional, extensible interfaces between Byos infrastructure components.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to decompose complex requirements into manageable deliverables.
  • Conducting unit testing in Python to ensure software quality and maintainability.
  • Documenting technical decisions, designs, and implementation details clearly and thoroughly.
  • Applying strong software engineering discipline and best practices to all development activities.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of Linux systems administration with strong command-line skills (nft, awk, sed, ip, ifconfig).
  • Hands-on experience configuring Linux firewalls using nft; iptables experience is an asset.
  • Deep understanding of firewalls, routing tables, and network traffic management, with emphasis on conceptual knowledge over specific tools.
  • Several years of Python development experience with strong fundamentals (non-web framework focus), including unit testing.
  • Solid grounding in software engineering principles and system design.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Self-directed, adaptable, and able to work independently while contributing effectively in collaborative, team-based environments.
  • Quick to learn new libraries, tools, and technologies, with a strong problem-solving mindset and deep technical foundation in networking and systems administration.

Nice To Have

  • dbus.
  • RabbitMQ, STOMP, AMQP 0.9.1.
  • PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, Alembic.
  • OpenVPN, OpenSSL.
  • Docker.

What’s In It For You

  • Health, Dental, and Professional coverage for you and your family start immediately.
  • Flexible working hours/environment with generous home office allowance.
