About the Chamber:

The Halifax Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization representing and supporting over 2,000 businesses in Halifax. With 86% of our members being small business owners, we tailor our events, membership programs, cost saving initiatives, and advocacy efforts to best represent our membership.

We host 100+ events per year, from small networking events to 800-person gala dinners. We advocate on our members’ behalf to all levels of government. We offer cost-savings programs through our Affinity Partnerships to save our members money. Finally, we act as a communications vehicle to share news about the Chamber, our members, and the business community in Halifax and beyond.

About the role:

Reporting to the Communications Manager, this role is a great opportunity to hone your communications skills and make strong connections in the Halifax business community. The role collaborates closely with all departments, including membership, policy, and events, to communicate the Chamber’s work to our members and to the broader business community. The role has a lot of variety to it – no two days look the same.

We are looking for an eager and organized individual to join the team. We want someone who can manage multiple priorities and deadlines, has strong customer service skills, and can communicate clearly and effectively with different audiences, both internal and external.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Graphic Design: Manages most in-house graphic design, including print, digital and branding materials for events, social media graphics, presentations, and more as needed.
  • E-newsletter: Manages the e-newsletter; planning, designing, writing, editing, production and distribution of the regular weekly newsletter along with department-specific newsletters featuring specialized content. Works with the team to determine featured content.
  • Social Media: Manages all social media accounts (Instagram and LinkedIn), including researching and developing content, writing captions, designing graphics, scheduling, creating reels, and managing promotions plans for events and programs. Works with Communications Specialist to determine priorities for monthly content calendar.
  • Media Relations: Writes and distributes media advisories and press releases for initiatives including events and policy updates. Acts as liaison for media at the office and on-site at events. Identifies media opportunities for management and the Board and coordinates media requests for interviews.
  • Event Support and Member Engagement: Attends Chamber events and provides on-site support to event staff. Interacts regularly with Chamber members to showcase the value of their membership through our communications.
  • Halifax Business Awards: Works with Events and Communications teams year-round planning and executing the Awards process and gala, including; setting up and managing nominations software, updating website, acting as main contact for the finalists, and other duties as needed.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • Relevant degree or diploma in Marketing, PR or related field
  • 1-year experience in communications role (combination of experience and education is also accepted)
  • Experience writing for different platforms and audiences
  • Strong team player
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Excels in a dynamic setting
  • Experienced in graphic design tools including Adobe Suite and Canva
    • Graphic design diploma not necessary, but comfort with the tools is essential
  • Knowledge and understanding of:
    • Social media scheduling software
    • Mailchimp, or another e-newsletter software
    • CMS platforms
    • (Eagerness to learn is a huge asset)

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • Salary range in line with regional averages
  • Eligibility for annual bonus program
  • Health & dental plan: After three (3) months, you will be eligible for the Chamber’s group health plan. The organization and the employee share the costs 60/40.
  • 3% RRSP matching: After six (6) months, you will be eligible for up to 3% matching on the Chamber’s group RRSP through RBC.
  • One day per week working from home
  • On-site gym
  • Office closed between Christmas and New Years’ Day
  • Coffee station always stocked (and snacks, too!)
