About the role

The successful candidate will assist with the system administration for maintaining and upgrading the Synthetic Environment Advanced Combat Operator Trainer (SEACOT) and Synthetic Environment Advanced Warfare and Operations Leadership Facility (SEAWOLF) for the Canadian Navy trainer at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Stadacona in Halifax and the Maritime Advanced Training and Test facility (MATTs) in Dartmouth. They will work as part of an overall team of software and system engineers to ensure high availability of the trainer for the Canadian Navy and to implement upgrades as required.  The role requires good working knowledge of Red Hat Linux, OpenLDAP, autofs, NFS, PXE, Kickstart, Anaconda, Bash scripting, and VMware virtual computer maintenance.  Hardware replacement of computers, rack mount servers and components will be required, including product research, and purchasing. Periodic evening shifts are required as part of the role.

Daily tasks include monitoring for system issues, fixing/replacing faulty hardware, maintaining adequate sparing levels, and performing system updates/upgrades when required.

What you bring to the role

  • The candidate must have a minimum of 5+ years of experience with a solid understanding of Linux system administration including knowledge of troubleshooting Linux networks and systems
  • The candidate will be supporting a complex trainer and will be expected to solve problems quickly with support from the primary administrator to prevent impact to the Navy training schedule
  • The candidate will have to diagnose issues that arise in the trainer, including issues that may not have been seen before, and come up with the quickest way to get the system operational for training.
  • The candidate will be largely responsible for day-to-day administration with some assistance from more senior staff if needed
  • Will deal with the customer on a regular basis as they maintain the trainer, and may occasionally need to explain to the customer the need for maintenance time or why the trainer is not functional
  • The candidate will be required to assist in receiving and disposal of equipment, which can involve loading/unloading and transporting material to a dumpster.
