Data Engineer (Contract)

Venor is proud to partner with the Halifax Port Authority (HPA) on their search for an experienced Data Engineer. This is a contract position with an expected duration of 9 months.

The Port of Halifax – Joint Operation Center (JOC) is a collaborative effort between the Halifax Port Authority, Terminal Operator PSA and Rail Operator CN to leverage advanced data analytics and real-time intelligence tools. This program looks to create new supply chain efficiencies across marine, rail, and trucking operations through a data governance model and a Data Integration Hub (DIH) equipped with advanced analytics capabilities.

The Data integration project requires the talents of an experienced Data Engineer who can build out data sets, working with the business to deliver insights and dashboards using the latest MS Azure technology.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Director of IT, the Data Engineer will

  • Work closely with the data integration team, consultants, business units, and external Joint Operations Center (JOC) partners to ensure that data is robust, scalable and aligned to the business needs.
  • Collaborate to design, develop, test, implement and support technical solutions for data ingestion and transformation.
  • Conduct rigorous testing and validation to ensure requirements are met and the system performs as expected.

What we are looking for

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong experience with Azure Databricks and GIT
  • Data Modelling and Data Warehouse Concepts: Understanding of data modelling, data warehousing, and data lake concepts.
  • Programming Skills: Strong programming skills, especially in PySpark and SQL
  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and optimize data workflows.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

*** This consulting role will be mostly on-site at the PIER offices for 4 days/week.
