Coded Bias Film Screening & Discussion
OnlineThis film screening & discussion will feature Shalini Kantayya's film ' Coded Bias'. This event is in recognition of the International Day for Women and Girls in Science. The hope is that this screening and discussion will encourage reflection and passionate collaboration between participants on the topic of bias in STEM. Coded Bias explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini´s startling discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces and women accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all. This film is rated M for Mature Audience (17+) and is open to all. Screening will take place via Zoom, a link will be emailed to all those registered. A discussion will follow the screening and will be led by Dr. Shohini Ghose, award-winning Quantum Physicist and NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, Ontario region.
