Version control is the practice of managing and sharing changes to documents, programming code, websites or any other files to keep track of what’s been changed, by whom, when and why. All previous versions of files are saved and you can even revert to a previous version. Git is a version control software. Git-portal sites, like GitHub or GitLab, offer many useful features to facilitate collaborative development. This two-part series introduces participants to Git tools. The first session on November 21st focuses on version control. The second workshop on November 28th will explore using Git for collaborative development. About this event More than 80% of NPower Canada alumni secure employment or enroll in higher education within 6 months of graduating, with 30-40% already placed into jobs upon completing training. Graduates launch digital careers in roles such as Help Desk Agent, Data Analyst, QA / Tester and Business Systems Analyst with companies like TELUS, Accenture and CIBC. NPower Canada is a registered charity launching individuals 18 + (with no maximum age) into meaningful digital careers. NPower Canada's virtually delivered programs provide participants with 15 weeks of no-cost, part-time tech skills training, including industry certifications, complemented by employability skills coaching and wraparound supports (including bus pass, interview clothing and laptops/WiFi based on financial need). Program participants are also connected directly with employers, job retention supports and five years of alumni services including continued education and mentorship. Candidates do not need any prior background in tech to apply. They must have completed their high school, Dogwood or GED, and be eligible to work in Canada. This session will focus on collaborative development workflows using Git-collaboration sites like GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket and will demonstrate how to work with branches, issue tracking, contribute to projects using pull-/merge-requests, code-review, how to run CI/CD-pipelines and use other common features of these platforms. Prerequisite to attending this workshop is a basic experience with using Git by: attending the session Version Control with Git on November 21, 2023; having attended the Version Control with Git lecture of any Software Carpentry workshop; or having hands-on experience with Git version control (i.e. being familiar with the Git commands: status, add, commit, checkout, log, diff, push, & pull). Volta Pitch Competitions are an opportunity for those in the Atlantic Canadian tech and innovation communities to practice their three-minute business pitch and receive feedback from peers and industry professionals. Our Quarterly Pitch Competitions provide participants with experience pitching to investors and potential early adopters. Each competition will be judged by a panel of entrepreneurs, potential investors and community leaders. Judging will be based on the pitch, business idea, and will focus on presentation quality and content. Quarterly Pitch Competitions are only open to residents of Atlantic Canada. An idea, product or company may be pitched a maximum of twice. Previous Volta Pitch Competition winners will not be allowed to pitch the same idea/business at future competitions (new businesses or ideas from the same company are permitted). While working with large sets of numbers, it is often quite useful to display the information graphically. Often, we use basic graph types such as histograms, scatter plots, bar charts, box plots etc. We will use R as our programming language for this workshop. Basic knowledge of R is highly recommended, although it is not mandatory. The learning objectives will include: Create simple scatterplots, histograms, and box plots. Compare the plotting features of base R and ggplot2 package. Plotting with ggplot2 Plotting time series data Arranging and Exporting plots.
