Ron Allum, Managing Director at Ron Allum Deepsea Services, is a submarine designer, cave diver and inventor. Allum is regarded as one of the world’s most experienced and accomplished cave divers. In 1983 he led an expedition to Cocklebiddy Cave on Australia’s Nullarbor Plain. The expedition achieved a world record push of 6.24 km into the cave system. Meet our Panelists Dr. Sara Iverson Dr. Sara Iverson is a professor of Biology at Dalhousie University and the Scientific Director of the global Ocean Tracking Network (OTN). She is also affiliate faculty at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Sara received her BSc in zoology from Duke University and her PhD in physiological ecology, working jointly with the Smithsonian Institution’s Department of Zoological Research and the University of Maryland. She held postdoctoral fellowships at Georgetown University and the Canadian Institute of Fisheries Technology, Technical University of Nova Scotia. Sara began her faculty career at Dalhousie in 1994 as a NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Canada) Women's Faculty Awardee. This workshop is designed for either new HPC users, or for experienced users either transitioning to Slurm or seeking to improve efficiency with the scheduler. Compute Canada’s national systems use a job scheduler called “Slurm”. In this session you will learn how Slurm works and how it allocates jobs, helping you to: minimize wait time by framing reasonable requests; ask for only the resources you need, to improve efficiency; increase throughput; run more jobs simultaneously; and troubleshoot and address crashes. The emergence of digital technologies has catalyzed a shift to a digital economy. This digital revolution has seen sweeping changes in how work is done across industries, including Canada’s marine industries. A recent study found that industry members communicated a growing awareness of a skill gap, particularly among tenured workers. Regional marine employers have also expressed some concern that this gap, coupled with a gap in awareness of new technologies, could cause further lags in adoption of new technology and digital skill development – which in turn could shift our role from leading the blue economy to lagging it. Join Volta and BBI to learn more about a new program that will nurture the growth of Black and Indigenous entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada Join Volta and the Black Business Initiative on Tuesday, January 26 at 4:00pm to learn more about an exciting, collaborative new program that will support the growth and development of Black and indigenous entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada. The program will run twice per year in 2021, with the first cohort beginning in mid-March. Each cohort will last four months with up to 10 participants per session. During that period, participants will undergo intensive training to build out their business idea or career objective, while receiving support and mentorship from leading experts in various fields. The cohort will have access to a working lab, located in Volta’s Co-Working Space, to work alongside one another as they build out their ideas; they will also receive an honorarium for participating. Timelines for this program will align with further development opportunities and events, such as quarterly Pitch Competitions, Volta Cohort, and Volta LEAP.
