ACENET: Cloud from A to Z Workshop Begins

October 19, 2020 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm ADT

Accelerate Discovery
In-depth workshop for users with no prior cloud experience, at the end of which you will have a virtual machine and a Jekyll website.

Cloud computing provides great flexibility allowing complete control of the computing environment. In addition the environment can be copied, backed up, created and recreated in an automated way. In these lessons we will start you on the path towards making use of the great flexibility and power of cloud computing.

A common use case for the cloud is its ability to provide web services. To explore the flexibility and power of cloud computing we will use the popular static website generator Jekyll. Static website generators offer many security benefits, and simplify and reduce the maintenance burden associated with well known dynamic CMSes such as WordPress and Durpal.

This workshop will take place on:

Monday, October 19th – 2:30-4:30pm (ADT)

Wednesday, October 21st – 2:30-4:30pm (ADT)

Monday, October 26th – 2:30-4:30pm (ADT)

Wednesday, October 28th – 2:30-4:30pm (ADT)

We will be recording the presentation part of this workshop only. The recording will be paused or stopped for every question or discussion period.

Participants must register using their institutional / organizational email address (not a personal email, ie. gmail).

For further instructions to prepare for the upcoming workshop please see HERE

You are very strongly encouraged to have a Compute Canada account and cloud project well before the course begins. It can take several business days to obtain an account and project (see the setup at this link: https://acenet-arc.github.io/cloud_from_a_to_z/setup/ for more details). Having your own cloud project means you can continue to use what you have created after the course concludes.

If you are unable to get an account and project please contact lydia.vermeyden@ace-net.ca. We can arrange for you to participate in the workshop using a guest account, but you will not be able to keep any of the work you complete there.

You will need to have your own laptop or desktop on which you can install the required software (see the setup for more details).

Instructions for how to join the workshop will be sent out one day prior to the first session.
