Trying to make financial decisions can often feel like deciphering a complex puzzle, especially when sales are involved. It’s a common pain point Ben Mayhew seeks to address with Aergo Financial Planning, your reliable guide, offering clear and unbiased solutions to simply your fiscal path.
With nearly a decade in the traditional financial services sector, founder and CEO Ben Mayhew wanted to create company where his clients’ goals were the destination, not just waypoints in a product sales pitch.
“One of the things that was always a little bit frustrating about that environment was that your ability to provide advice to people was based on their abilities and willingness to purchase your product,” said founder and CEO Ben Mayhew.
That’s why he created Aergo Financial Planning as an advice-only business. They’re not trying to sell a product or get you to invest, rather, they offer clients targeted, data-driven financial advice and comprehensive financial plans.
“That really is our primary draw,” said Mayhew. “When you separate the product out from the service, it allows you to be much more focused on the individual that you’re working with because you are not trying to fit them into a particular product. You’re trying to provide the best advice for their situation.”
Since its soft launch in November, Aergo Financial Planning has experienced steady growth, attracting more tech-focused clients. Given this, Mayhew emphasizes a security-first approach to his business. The use of third-party financial planning software and secure document storage is the key to maintaining confidentiality of information, said Mayhew, especially with the rise of big data, cloud technologies and AI.
“I tend to take the approach of saying if your business would not exist without strong information security, then those are the types of businesses I should be dealing with,” said Mayhew, adding his top piece of advice for someone carving out their financial flight plan is that everyone is different with varying needs.
“If you’re going to hire someone make sure to ask how they are remunerated, and make sure to know that taxes are not a bad thing because it shows you made money.”
In the near future, the company is eager to work with the Financial Planning Association of Canada, providing pro bono advice and deepening community involvement. In a departure from conventional financial discussions, Mayhew focuses on the psychological side of financial planning, which is why he is excited to offer more finance education and partnerships with organizations like Digital Nova Scotia.
“I think that by having a good solid financial plan that people understand, it can help to reduce that anxiety and stress,” said Mayhew.
“It’s about getting the word out about what financial planning is and how it can help alleviate that big stressor.”
