Twenty twenty-two was a pivotal year for Binogi.
This past year was one of growth for the Halifax-based software company. Binogi signed a major contract in Germany, which could mean 250,000 new users in three years.
“That really legitimizes our growth strategy,” said Chief Content Officer Andrew Anningson. “We are officially scaling up.”
Binogi creates curriculum-based multilingual digital learning tools for K-12 students and was founded to provide a better solution to allow students to learn at their own pace. Its core platform consists of animated lessons and interactive quizzes, where students learn curriculum-based lessons in a language of their choosing. Videos can be played back at different speeds — slower speeds for language comprehension, or faster speeds for a quick review.
“One cool feature is that students can study and take quizzes in their preferred language and the teacher can review the quiz results in their main language,” said Anningson. “This is an amazing way for students to keep up with studies while working on new language acquisition!”
Along with skill-building, the platform’s accessible content has helped accelerate the integration of newcomers into the school environment. It’s also an excellent resource for teachers, and the company works with a steering group of educators who use their product and help the team constantly refine and improve its features.
“Obviously a more flexible learning environment is evolving with a growing focus on distance education and digital tools. That said, in-person learning has a huge social component which cannot be overlooked in the development of the next generation,” said Anningson.
“We are designing Binogi to support students everywhere. It will integrate into a fully digital classroom as well as supporting learners in extreme situations such as refugee camps.”
Through schools, pilots and ongoing research, learners have joined Binogi from all around world, including from Kenya, Tanzania and Mexico.
Binogi has a large market presence in both Sweden and Germany, but this past year, it partnered with its first Canadian school board in Ottawa and has also entered the U.S. market.
With a big year of growth behind them, Binogi plans to keep the momentum going this year. As it enters new markets, the company is on track to hit a major milestone in 2023: “We are aiming to sign our one millionth user this year,” said Anningson.
“All the planning and preparation we did over the past few years is now being put into action!”
