Did you know that every time your doctor takes a blood sample, your lab results and diagnosis can be affected by the journey your sample takes to the laboratory? This affects nearly 3 million patients annually, or approximately 8,000 patients every day, which can lead to delayed or even false diagnoses as 70% of patient diagnostics are based on blood samples.
If you look at the history of many successful tech companies, they were born from a need to solve a challenge and find solutions. Motryx is one of those companies. The venture-backed start-up developed a subscription-based IoT platform, enabling laboratories and hospitals to monitor their blood samples in the transportation process. What began as eight pilot projects have now evolved into a global reach, working alongside hospitals and laboratories in Europe and one of the largest private lab corporations in the US.
Based in Nova Scotia, the team of ten are a diverse and collaborative group that values openness and respect. They are analytical, adaptive, selfless and driven, and pride themselves on setting ambitious goals, moving fast and working hard to meet those targets. Overall, everyone in the Motryx team makes significant contributions to the growth of the company, and all believe in the work they are doing to build a new standard for blood sample transport.

Their mission is to empower hospitals, labs and their patients with confidence those blood specimens are transported in a manner that ensures quality diagnostics and accurate testing. They want to deliver quality control and assurance in every blood specimen that is being transported, making sure people get accurate information without delays.
If you think about the times you’ve had blood taken, did the transportation of your sample ever cross your mind? This step is highly overlooked in the blood sample process, naming it the ‘Black Box of Transport systems’ – most know how the blood analysis begins but not how the transport system operates. Over 75% of mistakes happen in the pre-analytical phase before the sample even reaches the lab, and the average cost of one-per-analytical error is 208 USD. This cost reflects 1.2% of total hospital operating costs, approximately 1.2 Million USD per year of an average US hospital with 650 beds.
With the creation of VitalQC by Motryx, labs and hospitals now have access to technology to monitor how blood samples are transported from the patient to the laboratory. VitalQC is a hardware device that mimics a blood vial and ships alongside patient samples. The device allows Motryx’s software to provide laboratories with insights that enable them to make decisions about the type of transport systems used in the process. VitalQC technology provides many benefits and the team at Motryx has the numbers to back it up, such as 87.5%-time savings, up to 84% cost savings and five times more accurate than traditional validation protocols.

With their technology leading the way, Motryx has secured two very exciting partnerships. The first being their distribution agreement with Aerocom who is a global leader in Pneumatic Tube Systems, for the joint provision of VitalQC. Their second partnership with LabQuality will allow them to jointly offer a new EQA scheme for Pre-analytics of Pneumatic Sample Transport, addressing the pre-analytical errors that arrive due to the transport process.
We keep sharing that Nova Scotia’s tech community is thriving, and Motryx is a shining example of that. Taking a challenge that most have never considered, and creating a viable and effective solution has resulted in a successful new business that is growing right here, in our province.
Congratulations to Motryx and the team on your new partnerships and continued success. Learn more about them at motryx.com.
