We are thrilled to welcome our new Project Coordinator, Will Leckey to the team! Will is a co-op student from Dalhousie University joining us for the fall term.
Tell us about yourself.
I am a third-year Commerce student majoring in Accounting at Dalhousie University. I have a very diverse work background, from being a camp counsellor, sales associate, architecture intern, tax accountant, and much more. In each different job I’ve acquired a broad skill set that I am eager to apply working in this new position as a Project Coordinator co-op. Having never worked in the tech industry I am keen to learn more about Nova Scotia’s technology sector. Outside of work I am often searching for the best cup of coffee, a scenic running route, or a great beach.
Will, can you tell us something about yourself that isn’t in your bio?
During my past five summers I worked at Camp Glenburn as a counsellor and Canoe/Kayak director. Through my time at camp, I developed a passion for working with youth. Although I no longer work at Camp Glenburn, I volunteer at the Discovery Centre in Halifax helping youth of all ages engage in the world of STEM.
What do you love most about your program at university?
From my first Commerce class, I knew the program was the perfect fit. My favourite thing about business is how broad it is. I enjoy learning about the many facets of the business world, including the diverse careers within it. Taking on this position at Digital Nova Scotia will be very different from my past jobs but I am eager to tackle a new position and broaden my knowledge within a different industry.
The tech sector in Nova Scotia is thriving, what are you most looking forward to about working in this industry?
The thing that interests me the most about the technology sector is how it is constantly evolving to meet present needs. Within the current pandemic, there is a significant call to action within the tech sector. Working with Digital Nova Scotia during this pandemic will be a unique experience to see firsthand how technology companies will pivot to aid small businesses within Nova Scotia. I am most looking forward to working with our members to facilitate meaningful connections that will foster innovative collaboration and positive changes to the lives of many.
So, it’s your first day, what do you hope to accomplish while you’re with us?
This position will enable me to gain crucial knowledge about the ever-evolving tech sector in Nova Scotia. Working in this environment I hope to learn more about how the tech sector contributes to the overall growth and success of Nova Scotia.
What’s something you’re really interested in that might surprise us?
For a significant period of my life, I wanted to become an architect. My first year at Dalhousie University I was in Community Design, a pre-architecture program. Although I am now in business and have altered career plans, I still have a strong interest in design and architecture and will always admire a cool building.
If you were given a plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you want it to be?
Australia! I have been fortunate enough to travel to many places but have never ventured as far as Australia. The bustling culture paired with the amazing landscapes is what appeals to me the most.
