Press Release: Youth Strive for Excellence at the Nova Scotia Skills Competition

DARTMOUTH, Nova Scotia – Friday, April 20, 2018This Friday, the NSCC Akerley Campus will play host to the 20th Annual Nova Scotia Skills Competition, presented by Skills Canada – Nova Scotia (SCNS). Six competitions will take place including automotive service, car painting, cooking, heavy equipment service, landscape gardening, and welding.After Friday’s event, close to 300 students and apprentices will have competed in over 40 skilled trades and technologies over the past six weeks. Competitors in the Nova Scotia Skills Competition strive for excellence and gain recognition from some of industry’s best. Bronze, silver and gold medals will be awarded in each competition area. Gold medalists then have the opportunity to join Team Nova Scotia and advance to the Skills Canada National Competition, taking place this June in Edmonton, Alberta.

“Skilled tradespeople and technologists are in demand across the province. For twenty years, industry representatives, educators and youth with a passion for skilled trades and technologies look forward to the Nova Scotia Skills Competition.” says Robin Lorway, Executive Director, SCNS. “This event celebrates some of the talented young people entering these fields, and will complete this years Team Nova Scotia, for a total of 44 members representing our province on a National stage.”This event would not be made possible without the generous support of the Nova Scotia Community College, Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency, Department of Labour and Advanced Education (Post-Secondary Disability Services), and Employment and Social Development Canada.

Skills Canada – Nova Scotia is a not-for-profit organization that provides opportunities for Nova Scotian youth to explore skilled trades and technologies, discover their passions, and strive for excellence.
