SUMMARY:The FAST+ER Framework for Effective AI Prompts
DESCRIPTION:UX NS APRIL MEETUP \nLarge language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Claude are increasingly prevalent in both professional and personal settings. However\, the quality of an LLM’s output is directly influenced by the quality of its input. Weak prompts that lack essential elements will lead to unsatisfactory results. \nIn this talk\, UX NS will explore strategies for crafting effective AI prompts\, then delve into Nikki Anderson’s FAST framework for product prompts\, incorporating a few practical tips. Additionally\, they will examine how LLMs can be trained to utilize this framework to identify and improve weak prompts. \n> Agenda\n7:00 PM Doors open\, networking time\n7:15 PM Introductions from the event hosts\, Nata and Ruby\n7:20 PM The FAST+ER Framework for Effective AI Prompts with Charles Novabos\n7:50 PM Q&A\n8:15 PM Networking and wrap-up\n8:45 PM Doors close \n> Speaker Bio\nCharles Novabos (he/him) is a user experience researcher with over a decade of experience in various domains\, including e-commerce\, hardware development\, fintech and currently travel tech with WhereTo\, a subsidiary of Flight Centre Travel Group. SUMMARY:Doing Work That Matters - UX NS Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Details\n\n\n\n\n\nUX NS is excited to welcome Barb Spanton to this month’s meetup! \nThere’s a quiet shift happening in the industry. UX professionals are drawn to work that genuinely helps people – work that aims to make a difference and solve real problems. For many\, that path leads to healthcare products and services. Then reality hits. \nDoing meaningful work in healthcare is hard. Progress is slow. Regulation is heavy. Legacy systems\, complex integrations\, and high stakes are the norm. Meanwhile\, fast-moving startups promise higher pay\, shinier titles\, and the thrill of “moving fast and breaking things.” \nThis talk looks beyond the idealized idea of “meaningful work” and into the lived reality of creating impact in complex\, highly regulated domains. \nWith Barb Spanton\, this session will explore what impact really means in healthcare\, why it’s often underestimated\, and how professionals can find purpose\, progress\, and influence—even when the work is anything but glamorous. \nJoin UX NS for an engaging and thought-provoking evening. Snacks and drinks will be served. \nAgenda\n7:00 PM Doors open\, networking time\, snacks and drinks\n7:15 PM Introductions from the event hosts\, Nata and Ruby\n7:20 PM Doing Work That Matters with Barb Spanton\n7:50 PM Q&A\n8:15 PM Networking and wrap-up\n8:45 PM Doors close \nSpeaker Bio\nBarb is a UX leader with over 25 years of experience designing and delivering products in complex\, highly regulated domains\, primarily healthcare. Her work has been shaped by a belief that doing meaningful work—especially work that impacts patients and clinicians—is both deeply challenging and deeply rewarding. \nShe currently leads UX for Siemens Healthineers\, where she supports a global team building the next generation of oncology care solutions while advancing UX maturity across the organization. Barb has been an active voice in the UX community\, speaking and organizing events at the intersection of design and healthcare\, and is passionate about mentoring designers to thrive and have an impact in complex\, real-world environments. \nHow to find the event at Siemens Healthineers (1675 Grafton St. Suite 400\, Halifax\, Nova Scotia)\nEnter through the doors at the North Tower of the Nova Centre (Beside BMO) and head to the fourth floor via the elevators. \nAcknowledgements\nThank you enormously to Siemens Healthineers for sharing their space. Thank you to Digital Nova Scotia for their sponsorship of UX NS. \nSupport us\nUX NS are solely volunteer-run and always looking for sponsors. SUMMARY:Finding Jobs in UX: What I Learned from Five Months of Unemployment
DESCRIPTION:Details\n\n\nIn a world where remote work is the norm and AI is transforming the landscape\, finding the perfect UX job—or even a job—can feel overwhelming. That was certainly the case for our June speaker\, Josh Salmon. When he found himself suddenly unemployed\, it seemed like even a decade of experience didn’t count for much. \nIn this talk\, Josh will share what he learned during five months of job hunting: how he rediscovered skills he’d forgotten\, made use of new tools (like AI)\, and stayed grounded through an uncertain chapter. He’ll talk about his journey from academia to the video game industry\, to being laid off\, and eventually finding a new home in healthcare UX. \nAlong the way\, Josh will cover practical tips on job searching\, refining resumes (or portfolios)\, preparing for interviews\, and staying sane throughout the process. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a career change\, we hope you’ll find something useful—and maybe even reassuring—in his story. Hope to see you there! 😊 \n> Agenda\n7:00 PM Doors open\, networking time\n7:15 PM Introductions from the event hosts\, Nata and Ruby\n7:20 PM Finding Jobs in UX: What I Learned from Five Months of Unemployment with Josh Salmon\n7:50 PM Q&A\n8:15 PM Networking and wrap-up\n8:30 PM Doors close \n> Speaker Bio\nJosh Salmon earned his PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Dalhousie University in 2013. While at Dalhousie\, he worked on rehabilitation research at the Brain Repair Centre and later joined Dr. Stewart’s Interdisciplinary Addictions Lab. He then made a sharp pivot into the video game industry\, holding various UX research roles at Ubisoft\, Kabam\, and Alpha Dog Games. \nIn May of 2024\, Josh found himself suddenly unemployed when Microsoft closed several of its gaming studios\, including where he worked. It was an ~~exciting~~ scary five months where he relearned how to tailor his resume\, represent himself in interviews\, and make the most of new AI tools. \nJosh is now in a new role at Varian\, where he works as a UX Researcher supporting the development of healthcare software. He’s thrilled to be part of a team advancing oncology care right here in Nova Scotia — and especially grateful to be working alongside talented teammates. \nYou can find Josh on LinkedIn here. \n> How to find us at Volta (Halifax\, Nova Scotia)\nEnter at 1800 Argyle St. Proceed up the stairs or use the accessible ramp to the left of the stairs. SUMMARY:Fast\, not furious: Figma Auto layout 101
DESCRIPTION:We as designers have a lot on our plate\, the last thing we should be worrying about is fixing spacing in our designs we are constantly iterating. Not only that\, as our designs become more complex\, the ‘little tweaks’ start to compound and can become a major time sink. \nIn their next *virtual* meetup\, Andrea will be going over what auto layout is and how to apply it to different scenarios so that we can all work smarter\, not harder and create scalable components for our designs! \nThis will follow with a quick hands-on exercise so you can apply the learnings right away. \nAbout our speaker:\nAndrea is a UX Designer\, based in Seattle\, WA\, passionate about health tech with a background in Neuroscience. She currently works at ResMed\, a global company for sleep and respiratory care\, on projects related to patient onboarding. She also freelances for digital health startups on the side. With these different projects\, Andrea is determined to figure out the most efficient way to work without sacrificing quality. In her free time\, she enjoys travelling (yay remote work)\, boba\, and going to jazz bars.

SUMMARY:UX Research: From Insight to Impact
DESCRIPTION:Details \n👋🏻 We cannot believe it. We’re at the last UX Salon Halifax meetup of 2022. Thank you to all those who have supported us\, both virtually and in person! It’s been so wonderful to connect with our community again. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, November 29th at 7:30 PM as we hear and learn from Dr. Simon Landry\, a Senior UX Researcher with Thomson Reuters. \nThe aim of UX is to meet the end user’s needs through the best experience possible. Often\, the best way to understand the end user’s needs is through UX research (UXR). However\, for UXR (and the product) to reach its full potential\, research must only be the start of a process that goes from insight to impact. \nIn this talk\, we’ll explore a new 6-step framework to guide UXR insights to measurable end-user impact. This presentation will share how to identify and fill gaps in product knowledge\, effectively communicate your insights\, and measure your impact on the end user. You will learn about the theory and practice to feel confident using the framework. \nSimon is a researcher with over a decade of experience working on human perception. His background includes a Ph.D. in human perception\, working in startups\, academia\, and healthcare. Throughout all this\, his focus has been generating real-world impact from research. He is currently a senior UX researcher with Thomson Reuters\, working on legal technology products. \nConnect with Simon at www.drsimonlandry.com\, on Twitter @drsimonlandry or\, on LinkedIn \nThis is a FREE event thanks to our friends at Volta (Volta – Canada’s East Coast Innovation Hubhttps://voltaeffect.com) and ResMed. There will be time for some Q&A and networking. \nThe meetup will take place in Volta’s mezzanine floor classroom. Here is the best way to access the classroom: \n\nEnter the building through the front steps on Barrington Street.\nOnce inside\, head up the escalators. Check-in with security at the lobby.\nHead down the hall and use the elevators. Choose M for the Mezzanine.\nOn the Mezzanine floor\, proceed down the hall until you see the classroom.\n\nWe look forward to seeing everyone! 👏

SUMMARY:Workshop on Ethical Design: Reflection and Action
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThis month\, we are doing a workshop for some hands-on learning! 👋🏻 \nJoin us on Monday\, October 24th as we think together and discover with Nata Kostenko. \nBig tech scandals\, deceptive patterns\, data privacy issues… We hear about unethical practices all the time. But what exactly does it mean to “work ethically”? And how can you do it in a human-centred way? \nIt all starts with reflecting on our thought patterns and learning how to voice our concerns. We need to find our North Star and equip ourselves with tools to act against injustice (and keep our sanity). \nThis is a practical workshop where we will explore ways to incorporate ethics into your work process. We will play with some tools\, talk about existing barriers to ethical action\, and go through concrete examples you might encounter in your daily work. \nCome as you are and let us untangle this knot together! \nNata is a service designer and design researcher at Tilt the Scales. Every day she balances her belief in the power of design to make a difference with the urge to hide from the world’s problems. \nThis is a FREE event thanks to our friends at Volta and ResMed. There will be time for some Q&A and networking. \nThe meetup will take place in Volta’s mezzanine floor classroom. The classroom is a bit tricky to access at the moment due to ongoing building renovations\, so here are some tips to get there safely (some photos are on the event album as well): \n\nEnter the building through the doors at the corner of Salter and Barrington Streets.\nOnce inside\, proceed down the hallway until you see a set of elevators on the far end.\nIn the elevators\, choose L for Lobby. Sign in with security at the lobby.\nTransfer to a second set of elevators just down the hall in the lobby. Choose M for Mezzanine.\nOn the mezzanine floor\, proceed down the hall until you see the classroom.\n\nWe look forward to seeing everyone! 👏

SUMMARY:Beyond accessibility: Meaningful inclusion in citizen experiences
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThis month\, we continue on from last month’s focus in the area of accessibility and inclusion. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, September 28th as we listen and learn from Beth Fox\, Strategic Engagement Advisor with the Canadian Digital Service. \nMany UX and service design professionals find themselves advocating for their users within their product teams\, and their larger organizations. Increasingly\, we’re being asked to help improve not just usability\, but also accessibility in experiences. In this talk\, Beth encourages us to stretch beyond what we might think of as accessible by providing real-world examples of how inclusion (or a lack of it) impacts all facets of services and design. \nBeth Fox is a public servant with over a decade of bringing user experience and service design skills to public service challenges. As a founding member of the Nova Scotia Digital Service (NSDS)\, Beth spent years as a user researcher and service designer\, advocating for the people who use government services. In her work at the province\, she was an advocate for how human-centered design improves the delivery of services. A long-time collaborator across boundaries\, Beth recently made the move from the provincial to the federal public service. This summer she joined the Canadian Digital Service (CDS) as a strategic engagement advisor. She continues to champion inclusive approaches to how the government can better serve everybody. \nConnect with her via: Twitter & Linkedin \nThere will be time for some Q&A and networking. This is a FREE event thanks to our friends at Volta and ResMed.
