SUMMARY:WTWT: Empowering Women in the Digital Economy
DESCRIPTION:Join Volta and ICTC for a session on Empowering Women in the Digital Economy: Addressing Tech’s Untapped Potential. \nDescription: \nGender diversity in leadership leads to increased intellectual diversity and is associated with profitability and innovation. Strengthening gender diversity is critical to Canada’s digital economy. \nNevertheless\, gender diversity is challenged at the senior level in Canada’s digital economy. While the proportion of women in tech is on the rise\, many women in tech belong to younger cohorts and occupy junior-level roles. Women aged 45–54—the age group that would typically hold most mid- and senior-level roles—is the slowest growing cohort in the digital economy. Women in Canada are underrepresented in management roles across the economy\, and this trend holds true for digital economy management occupations. Women’s representation in upper-level roles appears to be low because many women opt out of the digital economy mid-career – seeking work in other sectors. \nICTC’s new study provides insights into why women leave the tech sector mid-career. This study finds that systemic barriers at varying levels of the technology ecosystem result in the digital economy being inconducive to women’s success\, ultimately resulting in women seeking work in other sectors. In addition to identifying these barriers\, the report recommends solutions\, in the form of a tool kit to help advance women into mid- and senior-level roles. \nThis talk presented by VOLTA and ICTC will explore these key findings further\, digging into specific barriers women in tech face\, and presenting actionable solutions that can be implemented to build a more inclusive digital economy for women and other people of marginalized genders.

SUMMARY:Learning On Demand: Developing a Micro-credentials Framework
DESCRIPTION:Are you leveraging micro-credentials when assessing job candidates or developing existing talent? Interested in frameworks that increase trust in micro-credential courses? \nICTC invites you to participate in an in-person roundtable discussion on May 26th in Halifax! \n\n\n\n\nEvent Details:\nLifelong learning is increasingly viewed as a “must” vs. a “nice-to-have” in today’s digital economy\, and micro-credentials are one way for learners to beef up their skills and competencies. However\, the sheer volume of options and different standards associated with the micro-credential ecosystem makes it challenging for learners to confidently select training pathways that will give them the skills employers seek. \nTo address this challenge\, ICTC is leading research that is part of a multi-sector initiative to define\, develop\, and validate a micro-credential framework. On May 26th\, ICTC is bringing together a group of Halifax’s digital economy leaders to share their perspectives on micro-credentials\, including how they can be designed and deployed to address real-life labour market needs. \n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n9:30 AM – 10:00 AM \nRegistration and refreshments \n\n\n\n\n10:00 AM – 11:00 AM \nSmall group discussion: labour market needs and micro-credential value-add \n\n\n\n\n11:00 AM – 11:15 AM \nRefreshment break \n\n\n\n\n11:15 AM – 12:15 PM \nSmall group discussion: designing and deploying micro-credentials \n\n\n\n\n12:15 PM – 1:00 PM \nEvent wrap-up and networking \n\n\n\n\nWe know your time is limited\, so you are welcome to attend the entire event\, or just pop in for the sessions of greatest interest/that best suit your schedule. Alternatively\, if you would like to refer someone else from your organization to attend in your place\, please feel free to do so. \nIf you (or a colleague) will be joining us\, register by May 19th! \n🍽️ Lunch and refreshments are on us! If you’ll be attending\, please let us know of any dietary restrictions that we should be aware of. \n——————————– \nWe respectfully acknowledge that Halifax is located on Mi’kmaw territory\, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people.
