In 2023, Turtle Island Technology Solutions came onto the tech scene as not just an IT firm, but as a dedicated advocate for Indigenous representation in an industry often lacking in diversity. Founded by Michael Hebert, a seasoned professional with 23 years of industry experience and a deep commitment to community and culture, the company has quickly become a leader in delivering comprehensive solutions and services while prioritizing Indigenous values and sustainability.
“Despite being aware of a small group of existing Indigenous firms, my own professional experience had not involved collaboration with other Indigenous peoples, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced diversity in the field,” said Hebert.
“Capitalizing on available programs, a robust network of great people that were already advocating diversity, and a deep understanding of market dynamics, I founded Turtle Island Technology Solutions.”
Since launching just last year, Turtle Island Technology Solutions, headquartered on the Millbrook First Nation, has grown to a team of five, supported by over 50 contractors from coast to coast. The firm offers a wide array of services spanning compliance, cybersecurity, datacenter and cloud technologies, network solutions, and end-user support.
But it’s not just about business. For Turtle Island, cultural sensitivity is paramount.
“While we recognize the commercial aspect of what we are trying to accomplish, we also respect our roots and ancestry,” Hebert said.
“Making our time available as mentors to Indigenous youth coast to coast, ensuring and supporting opportunities to share our story with all of Turtle Island, and finding innovative ways to use our technology expertise in ensuring the communities we serve have the access and technology to contribute to the indigenous economy.”
Infusing Indigenous wisdom into their practices, the company sets a powerful example for the industry. Inspired by teachings passed down through generations, Hebert and his team prioritizes environmental responsibility, mindful decision-making, and stewardship. For them, it’s about ensuring a sustainable world for generations to come.
Looking ahead to 2024, Turtle Island has exciting projects in the pipeline. They’re gearing up for a series of roundtable discussions on compliance and cybersecurity.
Additionally, they’re expanding their professional services offering to include legal experts in compliance, further solidifying their commitment to client success.
But perhaps most importantly, Turtle Island Technology Solutions remains deeply rooted in community initiatives. From providing speaking engagements and mentorship opportunities to spearheading projects that provide high-speed internet to remote Indigenous communities, the company continues to give back in meaningful ways. Through fundraising and support for organizations like Sexual Assault Centres across Canada, Turtle Island Technology Solutions exemplifies the spirit of Indigenous leadership and community empowerment.
