Celebrating a Summer of Discovery

This summer, Digital Nova Scotia’s Discovery Camps brought together youth from across the province to gain hands-on experience in technology. We’re excited to share a few highlights from the season.

Across five sites, Bridgewater, Yarmouth, Spryfield, Sydney, and New Glasgow, we welcomed 105 campers who took part in a wide variety of activities designed to spark curiosity and build confidence with tech. From taking apart old desktop computers in Hardware Breakdown, to learning coding through Scratch and Hour of Code, to creating original designs in TinkerCAD and experimenting with Micro:bits, campers had the chance to explore technology in a fun and practical way. They also tried out projects in AI and machine learning, 2D animation, and even put their creativity to the test with the Micro:bit Egg Drop. Our work was supported by an incredible team of 12 mentors, including new partners this year from Booknet Canada, GSTS, NSCC School of Business, and Imhotep’s Legacy Academy. These mentors played a key role in inspiring campers and showing them the many pathways a career in technology can take. We also had the privilege of visiting REDspace twice this summer, giving campers a unique look inside one of Nova Scotia’s leading tech companies.

A special thank you goes out to our camp counselors, Rachel, Derek, and Maddie, whose hard work, energy, and enthusiasm helped create a welcoming and supportive environment for every camper. Digital Discovery Camps wouldn’t be possible without our partners, mentors, and community supporters. Most importantly, we want to thank the campers themselves for bringing their curiosity and enthusiasm to camp each day. The future of Nova Scotia’s tech sector is in good hands.
