Atlantic Labour Market Brief: January 2025

Canada

• Employment grew at a strong pace in January, up from the prior month by 76,000 jobs, making it the sixth consecutive monthly gain.
• The growth occurred in both full-time and part-time positions.
• The unemployment rate fell in the month to 6.6%, influenced by the solid job gains.
• The goods-producing sector added jobs (+53,600), while the services-producing sector saw growth of 22,500 jobs.

Labour force: 22,484,000 (+61,200) Employment: 20,993,400 (+76,000)

Atlantic Canada

• The Atlantic Region experienced growth in employment in January, amounting to 2,000 jobs, making it the fourth consecutive monthly gain.
• Full-time jobs increased alongside fewer part-time.
• The rate of unemployment fell sharply, going from 7.7% to 7.1%, reaching its lowest point since May 2023.
• The goods-producing sector added jobs (+600), while the services-producing sector saw growth of 1,400 jobs.
