Ubuntu Media is a Black-led production company based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, dedicated to creating bold, socially conscious content that challenges perspectives and amplifies underrepresented voices. Founded by Israel Ekanem, the company operates at the intersection of artistic excellence and social impact, producing narrative films, documentaries, podcasts, and branded content that reflect the complexity and resilience of communities often excluded from mainstream media. Ubuntu Media has built a reputation for innovative, sustainable production practices and a steadfast commitment to equity, both on screen and behind the camera. Through inclusive hiring and structured mentorship programs, the company actively creates pathways for BIPOC artists, 2SLGBTQIA+ creatives, and emerging filmmakers across Atlantic Canada. With strategic partnerships spanning local and national funders, broadcasters, and cultural institutions, including Telefilm Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, CBC, and Screen Nova Scotia. Ubuntu Media develops original intellectual property with strong domestic and international appeal. The company's growing slate includes projects such as Afraid of the Dark, The Runners, the poetic visual short Lagos to Halifax, and feature films The Spa, The Space Between, Sunitha's Dinner, and Run. Ubuntu Media was commissioned by CBC to produce Black Out: Teo and Kayla Flinn, spotlighting stories that demand to be heard. The studio also created Good Earth: The Pots and Passions of Walter Ostrom for the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, honouring regional artistic legacy. Their documentary series East Out, now streaming on Bell Fibe TV, celebrates the vibrant LGBTQI+ community of Canada's East Coast.
