Equipment Technician 2 (TS11)-Pictou Campus


You will report directly to the Trades & Transportation Academic Chair at the campus. You will be responsible to troubleshoot, repair and install all equipment and accessories located in the laboratories and shops and to maintain equipment and laboratories/shops to a high standard of hygiene and safety following the 5S+S standard. Developing and maintaining preventative maintenance (PM) for equipment will be key in this position and is a large portion of the position. The incumbent will assist faculty with the supervision of students working in the laboratories and shops as required.

In addition, and as part of a pilot initiative in partnership with the Facilities Department, you will also be developing preventative maintenance checklists and periods for equipment at our Sydney, Port Hawksbury and Amherst/Springhill campuses as well. We currently use a system called Megamation and you will need to be very comfortable working in a PM database and with computers. While a majority of this PM creation work will be done remotely out of the Pictou campus, site visits will be required to verify equipment, specs, usage, etc. This will involve longer than normal days and flexible hours when needed on travel days. You will also be completing some regular mechanical equipment inspections for the campuses at these sites as well. This work will be coordinated through the Building Manager at the Pictou Campus.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is Journeyperson status (i.e. a Red Seal) in the Millwright trade
  • You have a minimum of five (5) years of recent and related occupational experience repairing a variety of shop equipment such as dust collection systems, mills, lathes, carpentry equipment, band saws, stationary drills, etc.
  • You have training in WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety regulations.
  • Occupational experience that includes welding, pneumatics and/or hydraulics would be considered an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail. Experience using Megamation or equivalent preventative maintenance database systems would be considered an asset.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology, and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work.
  • You have knowledge and experience in applying WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety and occupation-specific safety practices.
  • A valid Drivers License
  • A valid Fork Lift Operator certificate would be considered an asset as you may be using them daily in your job duties.
