Join the momentum. We are seeking a Director, Ethics and Independence to join our National Quality, Risk and Compliance team. Delivering quality in everything we do, MNP is a leading national accounting, tax and business consulting firm in Canada committed to providing valuable and reliable services to our clients. Work with professionals who provide best-in-class expertise in professional conduct and ethics to support and increase the depth of our internal practice. With a focus on compliance, the successful candidate will add value by applying their deep knowledge of the Canadian provinces’ and territories’ CPA Rules of Professional Conduct, Code of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics to advise and assist practitioners in advancing and fostering integrity-based decision-making and promoting ethical practices.

As a leader in the Ethics and Independence team, you interact regularly with various levels of leadership across the Firm and provide insight into opportunities for enhanced support, education, guidance and tools to promote compliance with the relevant ethics and independence standards.

Responsibilities

  • Reporting to MNP’s Ethics Officer, interpret the rules of professional conduct and ethics standards for professional accountants, including independence requirements
  • Provide advice on, and support team members with the adoption and implementation of practical solutions to ethical matters, including independence
  • Promote the importance of ethics to Partners, managers and other MNP team members across the Firm and play an integral role in driving compliance initiatives
  • Assist in the identification, development and implementation of technology solutions to current processes
  • Deliver expertise in the CPA Rules of Professional Conduct, Code of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics, as well as Firm policies, through the creation of high-quality thought leadership and presentations
  • Support the development and maintenance of the Firm’s policies and guidelines
  • Provide insight into opportunities for enhanced education and guidance
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of rules of professional conduct and ethics-related training in MNP’s in-house education programs
  • Maintain knowledge of changes in the profession through research and by attending relevant events and training or information sessions
  • Liaise and correspond professionally with team members, the Firm leadership team, ethics and independence standard-setters, CPA member bodies and regulators
  • Leverage team members appropriately to ensure delivery of resources that are complete, accurate and timely
  • Develop a thorough understanding of MNP’s services, businesses, and industry
  • Contribute to the development of new ideas and approaches to improve work processes
  • Mentor, motivate and coach team members towards professional and personal development by setting clear expectations, providing feedback, and addressing performance issues promptly in addition to conducting formal written performance reviews
  • Promote strong work effort, a balanced lifestyle and a high standard of team wellness

Skills And Experience

  • Completion of a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
  • 5 or more years of relevant work experience, post CPA designation
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the interpretation and application of Canadian CPA Rules, Code of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics, including expert-level knowledge in the independence and conflicts of interest rules
  • Proven pragmatic approach to dealing with ethics and compliance matters with a reputation for high quality standards
  • Ability to maintain discretion in recognizing, protecting and adhering to absolute confidentiality of highly sensitive or controversial information
  • Demonstrated ability to be proactive and engage in challenging conversations
  • Proven written communication and project management skills
  • Strong computer literacy including effective working skills with Microsoft 365 applications
  • Any of the following are considered an asset:
    • Knowledge of the International Ethics Standards Board’s (IESBA) International Code of Ethics for Professional Accountant
    • Knowledge of the American Institute of CPAs’ (AICPA) Code of Professional Conduct
    • Knowledge of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board’s (PCAOB) Ethics & Independence Rules and the Securities Exchange
    • Commission’s Auditor Independence Rules
    • Bilingual language skills in French and English considered an asset
    • Some travel may be required once it is safe for our team members to do so
