    The Database Engineer I is responsible for the design and operational support of key business application databases, including understanding requirements, capacity planning, installation, configuration, migration, monitoring, security, and troubleshooting to ensure the highly available and optimally performing database environment on Cloud and On-premises.

    In addition, the Database Engineer I position is responsible for administering services, technology, and operations within their assigned functional areas in support of our business partner’s expectations from an availability, reliability, scalability, security, audit, and cost perspective. This includes managing day-to-day operations and project activities within their towers, in conjunction with our Outsourcing Suppliers.

Job Description

The Database Engineer I is responsible for the design and operational support of key business application databases, including understanding requirements, capacity planning, installation, configuration, migration, monitoring, security, and troubleshooting to ensure the highly available and optimally performing database environment on Cloud and On-premises.

In addition, the Database Engineer I position is responsible for administering services, technology, and operations within their assigned functional areas in support of our business partner’s expectations from an availability, reliability, scalability, security, audit, and cost perspective. This includes managing day-to-day operations and project activities within their towers, in conjunction with our Outsourcing Suppliers.

What do you need to succeed?

  • 2+ years of SQL Server database administration experience handling medium to large database.
  • 2+ years of administrative support of SQL Server versions 2012, 2014, 2016, 2019 including: Database Engine, Integration Services (SSIS), Analysis Services (SSAS) and Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • 2+ years of experience and support with Cloud technologies and database workload
  • Manage medium to large projects and participate in a variety of projects through the entire project lifecycle (if applicable)
  • Provide SQL expertise as a shared resource to Agile projects
  • Pro-active and reactive performance analysis, monitoring, troubleshooting and resolution of difficult SQL issues
  • Support of application and database upgrades from existing SQL versions to SQL2016, SQL2019 and future supported releases
  • Migration of database objects from development through production following documented standards, policies, and procedures (Change Management Process)
  • Maintaining up-to-date documentation and procedures for all supported applications and environments
  • Organize and monitor personal workload and escalate to manager when issues arise
  • Work closely with other team members, technical/team leads, management, specialized IT areas and application support teams to ensure consistent delivery and quality of database services
  • As part of this position, required to provide escalation and mentoring to L1/L2 team members on an ongoing basis.
  • Escalation skill responsible for proactively supporting the L1/L2 members. Empowering them to resolve current issues and develop coping strategies for the future. Provide a healthy and trusting relationship via clear communication and setting appropriate boundaries.
  • Support and encourage the professional and technical development of the L1/L2 members. Provide active guidance to assist in achieving their goals. Offer a fresh perspective and independent point of view, while guiding a process that fosters growth and educational development of the L1/L2 members.
  • Evaluation of functionality and features with newer versions of the SQL Server DBMS as part of a readiness program
  • Experience with the Microsoft BI stack
  • Strong T-SQL skills that include a thorough understanding of system tables, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and SQL tuning
  • Hands-on experience with SQL Server installations and patching
  • Entertain day to day issues and be part of 24×7 support on rotational on-call schedule.
  • Help DBA team troubleshooting a critical performance issue or point in time recovery scenarios.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • 4-year degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Business Administration with a concentration on IT preferred or relevant military experience.
  • Cloud experience with Microsoft Azure and/or Amazon platform is a MUST.
  • 5-8 years of experience in database infrastructure services including production support, planning, Designing and Implementations or relevant military experience.
  • Experience in Hybrid Microsoft SQL Server (2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019) environment on-prem and on Azure.
  • On prem and cloud database migration and management expertise on either Azure or Aws.
  • Must have experience in Automation PowerShell, TSQL Coding, or any other automation languages such as .Net scripting with minimal supervisions or support from other folks.
  • Experience interfacing with business partners in performing problem identification, troubleshooting and resolution utilizing a methodical approach to complex problem solving.
  • ITIL Foundation certification
  • Experiencing supporting infrastructure service delivery with outsourcing partners
  • Proven ability to build and leverage productive relationships
  • Experience interfacing with business partners and performing technology problem identification, troubleshooting and resolution
  • Ability to manage large volumes of tasks and competing priorities

REQUIRED technology experience includes:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2019,2017,2016, 2014, 2012
  •  SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS); SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS); Oracle 11.x, 12.x
  • Managing cloud workloads on Microsoft’s data platforms including Azure SQL (PaaS) Database and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines (IaaS)
  • Designing, delivering, and supporting large scale and highly available data platforms including clustering, replication, log shipping, and mirroring
  • Performance monitoring, tuning, reporting, and troubleshooting techniques
