The first Ocean Connector of 2023 features advanced genomics sensors and industrial and regulatory uptake opportunities. Environmental genomics is a rapidly advancing field that promises to revolutionize the way industry conducts biodiversity monitoring. Such technology provides non-invasive means of collecting biodiversity surveys without physically harming organisms, particularly species-at-risk, at a considerably lower sampling effort and cost. Across marine sectors, consensus exists that the application of environmental genomics has advanced dramatically in a short amount of time, with demonstrable benefits. That said, there is an acknowledgement that further development is needed to increase regulatory confidence in applying genomics approaches within the industry. The result of advanced sensor technology for reliable in-situ sampling and analyses is a critical aspect that will further ease the broader application of environmental genomics. On February 2nd, Dr. Marc Skinner, senior marine scientist and biostatistician at Stantec, and Dr. Robert Beiko, co-founder and Director of Data with Dartmouth Ocean Technologies, Inc, discuss the current regulatory landscape, case studies for advanced genomics sensors, and industrial and regulatory uptake opportunities.

Creative Computing is a course developed by an international network of educators passionate about exposing kids to the computer sciences. This course uses the popular Scratch programming environment to aid young people (grades 4 to 6) in learning the basics of software development. Scratch is used over the world by students to easily create interactive artwork, interactive stories, and video games while acting as a stepping stone to the more advanced world of computer science. Course Objectives First and foremost, they aim to provide opportunities for young learners to become exposed to the computer sciences. Their goal is to provide a learning environment that goes beyond what students are taught in public schools about the computer sciences. They will explore software as an interdisciplinary creative act. Requirements None! Students will be provided a Chromebook as well as snack.

In collaboration with the Verschuren Centre, they are thrilled to host an information session and workshop on fishing vessel decarbonization located at the Verschuren Centre on February 22nd! This workshop will provide insight and guidance in supporting Atlantic fishers as the economy shifts towards renewable energy. Rimot, a Nova Scotian firm specializing in marine vessel electrification, will share its knowledge and experience on implementing sustainable technologies within the fishing industry. Over the past decade, the concept of Zero Trust has become a fundamental part of cybersecurity architecture. In fact, the concept of Zero Trust is behind most common network security policies, which require continuous and explicit validation, use least privilege access controls, and assume that a breach could have already occurred and we are simply not yet aware of it. Zero Trust has been fundamental in securing enterprise networks from cyber attackers. However, in recent years, cyber attackers are turning their attention away from network based attacks to finding code based vulnerabilities. In this talk series they will discuss how Zero Trust principles, applied so effectively to enterprise network security, can also be applied to continuously protecting the Software Development Lifecycle from would-be attackers.
