Ocean Connector: The Physics of Hydrophones with GeoSpectrum

Join us in welcoming GeoSpectrum Technologies founder, Dr. Bruce Armstrong, on September 19 at COVE for our Ocean Connector! The physics of hydrophones is easy to understand; mastery of the implementation of those ideas can be tricky. This talk will explain the physics in terms everyone should be able to understand. Topics covered will be piezoelectric ceramics, why a high frequency hydrophone is a poor choice to measure low frequencies and vice versa, preamp noise and how it relates to hydrophone sensitivity, why the low frequency sensitivity of a hydrophone is a ruler-straight line, and why it is sometimes better to calibrate hydrophones in air rather than water. Finally, you will learn that if you utter the words “rho-c”, you may be putting your professional reputation at risk. Dr. Armstrong has been designing transducers for over 41 years. In 1978 he began work as a Defence Scientist in the transducer group at DRDC-A. In 1985, he began working for Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems, where he designed DIFAR (vector) hydrophones for sonobuoys. In 1994, he founded GeoSpectrum Technologies, where he still works today, guiding the technical teams. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to construction on Parker Street, the main road to COVE will […]

National Ladies Learning Code Day – Intro to UX Design

Join thousands of Canadians coast to coast to coast taking their first steps learning about application development. With great design comes great responsibility. User experience (UX) design isn’t just about creating pretty or functioning websites - it’s about creative solutioning and trying to make people’s lives and experiences better. As application designers, we need to remember that we aren’t designing products for ourselves, but for other people. Being a UX designer allows you to work with and problem solve for a variety of different people, and empathy plays a huge part in this. During this collaborative learning experience, we’ll explore the difference between User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX), and how they work together. We’ll walk through the design cycle; including discovery, user testing, and user personas. Learners will also have a chance to experience different UX methods through hands-on exercises, including building physical and digital prototypes. Never worked on application design before? No problem! This workshop is designed for absolute beginners! During this 6 hour workshop, you’ll learn: Learn all about User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design Have a fulsome and holistic discussion around ethics and why ethical designing is crucial Solve real-world problems in collaboration […]

Angular Meetup

Join us for the fourth Halifax Angular Meetup, as we continue to dig deeper into all of the incredible things Angular can help with! Schedule: 6:30-6:45: Networking 6:45-7:15: Talk #1 RXJS & Observables 7:30-8:15: Talk #2 Component Inheritance 8:15-8:30: Networking About the sessions: RXJS & Observables: Observables in Angular are SUPER powerful and we can do a lot with them but they can be intimidating if you don't know where to start. In this talk we will discuss 1. reactive programming basics 2. the differences between promises and observables 3. common operators and when to use them 4. advanced operators and when to use them and by the end you'll be able to power-up your Angular apps using RXJS and Observables! Presenter: Chris Burton Component Inheritance: Inheritance in many object-oriented languages can serve as a mechanism to elegantly re-use code. The case with Angular is that inheritance is typically far from elegant, and can cause confusing components that hide their cost of use. In this talk, I will briefly introduce composition as the preferred object-oriented approach that comes naturally to Angular. Presenter: Jonathan Ignacio Register

DC902 Meetup

DC902 was founded in late 2019 to create a place for hackers, tinkerers, and security professionals to share ideas and projects. We are an inclusive group and welcome everybody no matter the background or skillset, if you are a n00b or 1337, you have a place here. Jeff Hann (ObiHann on Twitter, or VE1OBI on amateur radio) is the official leader pending any coups or mutinies. Goals We aim to prioritize social activity in this region by organizing gatherings to discuss security and other technical related topics on a regular basis To have a community to share and learn from each other, in a safe and encouraging environment To provide an environment of collaboration where new ideas can be explored and projects developed To be a safe space for unsafe computing Interests Security, technology, and hacking are almost infinitely broad terms, and though we welcome any new ideas here are a few things we are passionate about: Capture the flag activites (events, HTB, etc.) Wireless (basically anything, from amature radio to monitoring plaines, to tracking data from your water meter) Coding (software development, scripting, poetry for your computer) Learn more
