SUMMARY:Entrevestor Live: East Coast Startup Success
DESCRIPTION:Entrevestor Live is a half-day hybrid event dedicated to the greatest successes in the Atlantic Canadian startup community. \nDispelling the myth that #StartupAtlantic features only early-stage companies\, Entrevestor Live showcases the growth-stage companies that have had major funding rounds\, exits or gained a global presence. \nWhat’s more\, our conference is designed to maximize the time and budget of our customers. Its three-hour duration means you can attend without surrendering a day or more of your precious time. (People in Halifax will still benefit from a networking session after the program.) And it’s priced so that even early-stage founders can attend\, either in person in Halifax or online from anywhere. \nIf you’re an investor\, Entrevestor Live will show you what’s happening in Atlantic Canadian startups – in the most successful companies\, those companies poised to join the top tier\, and the emerging sectors. If you’re a founder\, the program will help you understand how the best companies got where they are. Either way\, this is a must-see event. \nWe’re delighted to partner with Volta\, Canada’s East Coast Innovation Hub\, which has agreed to host Entrevestor Live. A networking session will follow the event at Volta.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Ethical Design: Reflection and Action
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThis month\, we are doing a workshop for some hands-on learning! 👋🏻 \nJoin us on Monday\, October 24th as we think together and discover with Nata Kostenko. \nBig tech scandals\, deceptive patterns\, data privacy issues… We hear about unethical practices all the time. But what exactly does it mean to “work ethically”? And how can you do it in a human-centred way? \nIt all starts with reflecting on our thought patterns and learning how to voice our concerns. We need to find our North Star and equip ourselves with tools to act against injustice (and keep our sanity). \nThis is a practical workshop where we will explore ways to incorporate ethics into your work process. We will play with some tools\, talk about existing barriers to ethical action\, and go through concrete examples you might encounter in your daily work. \nCome as you are and let us untangle this knot together! \nNata is a service designer and design researcher at Tilt the Scales. Every day she balances her belief in the power of design to make a difference with the urge to hide from the world’s problems. \nThis is a FREE event thanks to our friends at Volta and ResMed. There will be time for some Q&A and networking. \nThe meetup will take place in Volta’s mezzanine floor classroom. The classroom is a bit tricky to access at the moment due to ongoing building renovations\, so here are some tips to get there safely (some photos are on the event album as well): \n\nEnter the building through the doors at the corner of Salter and Barrington Streets.\nOnce inside\, proceed down the hallway until you see a set of elevators on the far end.\nIn the elevators\, choose L for Lobby. Sign in with security at the lobby.\nTransfer to a second set of elevators just down the hall in the lobby. Choose M for Mezzanine.\nOn the mezzanine floor\, proceed down the hall until you see the classroom.\n\nWe look forward to seeing everyone! 👏

SUMMARY:A toast to Halifax tech | Welcome FreshBooks to its new home in Halifax
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nNova Scotia is becoming one of Canada’s leading technology and innovation hubs. For the first time in generations\, Nova Scotians can stay where they love (no offense\, Ontario)\, and the best and brightest from other parts of the country and around the world are flocking to Canada’s ocean playground. \nBuilding on this momentum\, FreshBooks — a Canadian-founded global tech unicorn — is putting down roots in Nova Scotia with a goal of hiring at least 50 new FreshBookers across Research & Development\, Sales\, Customer Support\, and more in the coming years. To celebrate\, FreshBooks has teamed up with Halihax to bring the city’s technology community together on November 10th in a truly Nova Scotian way — for a kitchen party on the waterfront. \nThis event will bring local technology and business leaders together to meet\, socialize\, and learn from one another: \nJeff Andersen\, co-founder of Halihax\, will introduce the Halihax organization\, history of the community\, and give a first look at the results from the 2022 Halihax Community Survey. \nAmanda Jacob (Design)\, Richard Schaefer (Engineering)\, and Carmine De Leon (Product Management) from FreshBooks will share the ups (and downs) of building one of the company’s newest product launches\, Chart of Accounts\, proving that accounting software is anything but boring. \nDrinks and appetizers will be available. \nCome join us as we celebrate FreshBooks’ new home in the province. \nQuestions:\nIf you have questions about the event — or if you’d just like to say hello to the FreshBooks team — please reach out to events@freshbooks.com \nFreshBooks\, a leading cloud accounting software\, is changing the way business owners manage their books. Loved by paying users in 160 countries\, FreshBooks is known for 10x Stevie award-winning customer support. With 500+ employees worldwide\, FreshBooks has raised more than $250 million dollars in funding\, and has ambitious plans to continue its global expansion. \nTo learn more about FreshBooks’ open roles\, check out the company’s careers page. \nHalihax\, a wordplay on Halifax and Hacking\, is a community organization based in Halifax\, NS with a mission to inspire\, connect\, and grow the technology community of Atlantic Canada. SUMMARY:UX Research: From Insight to Impact
DESCRIPTION:Details \n👋🏻 We cannot believe it. We’re at the last UX Salon Halifax meetup of 2022. Thank you to all those who have supported us\, both virtually and in person! It’s been so wonderful to connect with our community again. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, November 29th at 7:30 PM as we hear and learn from Dr. Simon Landry\, a Senior UX Researcher with Thomson Reuters. \nThe aim of UX is to meet the end user’s needs through the best experience possible. Often\, the best way to understand the end user’s needs is through UX research (UXR). However\, for UXR (and the product) to reach its full potential\, research must only be the start of a process that goes from insight to impact. \nIn this talk\, we’ll explore a new 6-step framework to guide UXR insights to measurable end-user impact. This presentation will share how to identify and fill gaps in product knowledge\, effectively communicate your insights\, and measure your impact on the end user. You will learn about the theory and practice to feel confident using the framework. \nSimon is a researcher with over a decade of experience working on human perception. His background includes a Ph.D. in human perception\, working in startups\, academia\, and healthcare. Throughout all this\, his focus has been generating real-world impact from research. He is currently a senior UX researcher with Thomson Reuters\, working on legal technology products. \nConnect with Simon at www.drsimonlandry.com\, on Twitter @drsimonlandry or\, on LinkedIn \nThis is a FREE event thanks to our friends at Volta (Volta – Canada’s East Coast Innovation Hubhttps://voltaeffect.com) and ResMed. There will be time for some Q&A and networking. \nThe meetup will take place in Volta’s mezzanine floor classroom. Here is the best way to access the classroom: \n\nEnter the building through the front steps on Barrington Street.\nOnce inside\, head up the escalators. Check-in with security at the lobby.\nHead down the hall and use the elevators. Choose M for the Mezzanine.\nOn the Mezzanine floor\, proceed down the hall until you see the classroom.\n\nWe look forward to seeing everyone! 👏
