DESCRIPTION:Details \nThis month\, we continue on from last month’s focus in the area of accessibility and inclusion. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, September 28th as we listen and learn from Beth Fox\, Strategic Engagement Advisor with the Canadian Digital Service. \nMany UX and service design professionals find themselves advocating for their users within their product teams\, and their larger organizations. Increasingly\, we’re being asked to help improve not just usability\, but also accessibility in experiences. In this talk\, Beth encourages us to stretch beyond what we might think of as accessible by providing real-world examples of how inclusion (or a lack of it) impacts all facets of services and design. \nBeth Fox is a public servant with over a decade of bringing user experience and service design skills to public service challenges. As a founding member of the Nova Scotia Digital Service (NSDS)\, Beth spent years as a user researcher and service designer\, advocating for the people who use government services. In her work at the province\, she was an advocate for how human-centered design improves the delivery of services. A long-time collaborator across boundaries\, Beth recently made the move from the provincial to the federal public service. This summer she joined the Canadian Digital Service (CDS) as a strategic engagement advisor. She continues to champion inclusive approaches to how the government can better serve everybody. \nConnect with her via: Twitter & Linkedin \nThere will be time for some Q&A and networking. Currently\, Sally is an executive-in-residence at East Valley Ventures. Previously\, she was CEO at a new social enterprise called Tribe Network and a senior director at Highline Beta. \nSally has led multiple corporate innovation venture teams within Fortune 1000 companies\, applying strategy and execution to help companies grow beyond their core. Over the years\, she has worked with organizations such as Brightspark Ventures\, National Angel Capital Organization and a number of others that enable the development of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. \nSally has actively been involved with the start-up community through her work with Techstars Startup Weekend and has travelled around the world facilitating events. She recently completed a six-year term serving on the national board of directors for the Community Foundations of Canada (CFC)\, a charity with an asset portfolio of $7B across a network of 191 local community foundations. \nSally has been part of multiple committees and was the co-chair of the strategic opportunities committee. She also gives back to her community by serving on the Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) board of directors as part of the executive committee and serves on the Inspirit Foundation board of directors. \nRob Barbara \nRob has spent 17 years working in investment management and capital markets and as an entrepreneur. Most recently\, he spent 11 years at Burgundy Asset Management\, a leading global investment management firm. While at Burgundy\, he founded its sister company\, Beaujolais Private Investment Management. When he left Burgundy in 2013\, Rob was a senior vice president responsible for private client business and was a board director. \nPreviously\, Rob worked at TD Securities in various capital markets roles. As an entrepreneur\, he was president and co-founder of a medical IT start-up\, eSalveo\, which was sold in 2001.\nRob received his MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business\, and his undergraduate and masters degrees (Economics) from Queen’s University. \nBen McDade \nBen is an investment associate at Innovacorp. In this role\, Ben identifies prospective investments and conducts all aspects of the investment review\, approval and closing cycle\, such as screening opportunities\, analysis\, due diligence\, and making recommendations to the investment team. DESCRIPTION:Details\nThis month\, we are doing a workshop for some hands-on learning! 👋🏻 \nJoin us on Monday\, October 24th as we think together and discover with Nata Kostenko. \nBig tech scandals\, deceptive patterns\, data privacy issues… We hear about unethical practices all the time. But what exactly does it mean to “work ethically”? And how can you do it in a human-centred way? \nIt all starts with reflecting on our thought patterns and learning how to voice our concerns. We need to find our North Star and equip ourselves with tools to act against injustice (and keep our sanity). \nThis is a practical workshop where we will explore ways to incorporate ethics into your work process. We will play with some tools\, talk about existing barriers to ethical action\, and go through concrete examples you might encounter in your daily work. \nCome as you are and let us untangle this knot together! \nNata is a service designer and design researcher at Tilt the Scales. Every day she balances her belief in the power of design to make a difference with the urge to hide from the world’s problems. \nThis is a FREE event thanks to our friends at Volta and ResMed. There will be time for some Q&A and networking. \nThe meetup will take place in Volta’s mezzanine floor classroom. The classroom is a bit tricky to access at the moment due to ongoing building renovations\, so here are some tips to get there safely (some photos are on the event album as well): \n\nEnter the building through the doors at the corner of Salter and Barrington Streets.\nOnce inside\, proceed down the hallway until you see a set of elevators on the far end.\nIn the elevators\, choose L for Lobby. By participating in the session\, you will be able to describe your business’ value proposition\, articulate your vision for the future\, and know what steps to take next to create a business with a firm foundation. \nAbout the speaker:\nNatalie Frederick-Wilson is an entrepreneur\, mentor\, business development professional\, MSVU student entrepreneurship\, program lead who joined the Centre for Women in Business at Mount St. Vincent University\, in October 2019 with a goal to inspire women and students to go from innovative idea to start-up\, and beyond. She does this by connecting them to the right business advice\, engaging business owners in strategic business conversations\, and training. \nNatalie holds a certificate in Business Development and in Leadership and Innovation from Dalhousie University and has extensive experience in business automation\, strategic business planning and customer service management.
